Captain's Chair

I'm sitting here with not much to do but sit here, stare out at the wind whipping across the bay and wait for the 9" of snow predicted for tomorrow until the grandkids arrive so I thought I'd pass this along if it helps anyone.

There have been some threads on captain's chairs for our boat, one of which I saw on a website for $500.... you know we can do better than that!

I got some PVC piping from HD and, with input from an engineering friend, put together a chair as per the attached snaps. The two leg supports come out of the leg cross bar and they, and the legs, fold flat for storage. The discerning eye will note a butt fitting on the fore & aft seat bars. That's because, on the beta model, that bar snapped after 2 seasons. I cut it an inserted a solid metal rod the diameter of the inside of the pipe but if you insert a rod, you wont need to do this repair..

We've found that a throw cushion fits just right as a seat, but the back bar hurts after a while so we use one of those West Marine folding seats. However, you have invert it and sit on the backrest as we've found if you use it correctly, the seat portion is too long and it pushes your knees into the wheel.

Materials:
2 - sections of PVP pipe
12 - "T" connectors
12 - 90 degree elbows
4 - 45 degree connectors
3' piece of metal rod or hard wood
2 pins to hold leg supports in place
Pipe cleaner/glue

Went down to the boat this AM and, for those who live to far from their boats to check, they are still there, anxious to get back in the water!

Have a very Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Merry Chrstmas to everyone on our web site!

Good Job Chuck. What I did on Carpe Diem was to build a seat out of starboard and then purchased a kayak seat and mounted it directly on the top of the box. That way, I just leave the box mounted on the stern seat and bring the kayak seat in whenever we are not sailing.
