C36mkii "renaissance Edition"

Catalina Yachts annouced today the reintroduction of a one year production run of the Catalina 36MKII "Renaissance Edition".

Gerry Douglas confided that the C36 was the stalwart pinnacle of Catalina's production over the years. The companies push toward larger and larger cruisers was not fitting with the current economic enviroment and it was time to get back to their roots of once again producing the best medium size family criuser ever made. They will break out the old molds and commence a one year production run to evaluate the market. Using a tried and true design and the latest production practices Catalina feels they can produce a product supperior in quality at a price the competition can not touch.

I'm glad you just confirmed that, Steve, because I had heard that and wasn't sure. I think it is a great idea.

I wonder why they are also offering the diesel-electirc hybrid propulsion, since that costs so much more initially. And I don't like that a furling main is standard and you have to pay MORE to get a standard main.

Let's hope it works out!

Duane,

You need to understand the Diesel Hybrid proposed is different than what you may expect. Unlike most other D/H installations Catalina is unvailing a Sterling Cycle Hybrid, the Stirling Cycle engine has been around for since the early 1800's and it can utilize any heat source, diesel, propane, gasoline (not my choice due to its volitility) solar or a candle anything that produces heat. It is an external combustion engine that is nearly silent, new materials and engineering have made this engine viable for many applications. This attached to a larger than normal house bank will yeald a nearly silent vibration free propulsion and nearly limitless electrical power aboard.

Mind you this will be an option, the standard engine will be a Yanmar 4JH series.

I assume he is noting that 4109 is the next in line as 4108 was the last 36.

I guess the date has passed and it is time for me to get back to work.

I was wanting to hack into California's Amber Alert System the electronic freeway sign system so I could post " DRIVE WITH RECKLESS ABANDON ".

Being unable to do this I thought I should just yank your chains a bit.

It was fun but short-lived.

I might be off base (usually am), but is 4110 04/01/2010 or otherwise known as the fools boat?

Awright, that's mean.

We got back from a week in Cuba at 5 am this morning. Our airline went banko when we were down there, we find out at noon the day before we are to fly home. Rumours abound, it appears we may end up on our own to find our way home, at best likely not getting home until Monday, then the tour operator manages to get another plane for Friday. But it was going to be way late getting in to Toronto, landing at 2 am, the usual hour and a half wait for customs, baggage and parking, then a 3 hour drive home. Oh joy!

So on 3 hours sleep in the last 36 or so hours I read this thread and am totally blown away that Catalina is paying such homage to a great boat. I feel vindicated in my belief that the 36 is the best boat they ever built. Only after reading pretty much all the thread and believing it all is true do the light bulbs slowly start to come on. And do I feel stoopid! Ah well, it was nice while it lasted.

But Cuba was, as usual, excellent! And this thread is actually pretty damn good!

It was almost as good as the turboed C36 in the Pac Cup

Well, Bud, the fact that you were fooled even for a short bit gives us some solace that it was not all wasted effort.

Thanks for admitting that. Hope you enjoyed Cuba.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate it.

I, too, took went for this hook, line, sinker, reel and outrigger. At least I didn't call up Frank Butler to ask about the production schedule on the new C36!

The sad thing is that this was such as attractive idea. I just can't get jazzed up about the 350 and 375.

Count me in. While reading the post, it actually made some sense what with the economy and all. If they were to make a brand new MK I, I might be in. Love my chart table. I've always been slow to pick up on April Fool's jokes. My ex-wife was born on April 1st, shoulda been a BIG hint.LOL

This post came up in a search, and yes I fell for it. I even googled sterling engine. After reading about a sterling engine I started getting suspicious. LOL

That is one of the nice things about these forums, Mike; information (useful or merely entertaining) is persistent.

I hope Steve will be happy to know his joke of 3+ years ago still got a chuckle.

Interesting enough i recently visited Catalina and they told me if a group of at least 10 asked them for 36's they would make them. They still have the molds.

Now THAT would be really interesting. Imagine having a 2014 C36 when it was common knowledge that production ended much earlier.
