buying 1994 Catalina 36

Hello all, I'm about to make an offer on a MKII 1994 model that looks pristine. Althought its never been cruised, only day sailed. I haven't had the survey yet but I will soon. Can anyone give me good suggestions as to what problems I should look for in particular? Also does anyone have a Raymarine chart plotter model RL70C and can tell me if chips are available and where?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks

As with any sailboat, but this boat for sure, chainplates for leakage, especially the two at the bulkheads. Check the bulkheads at their bases for any sign of water intrusion or punky wood. Those bulkheads can be changed so it's not necessarily a show stopper but it's a big job to replace them. Thorough moisture test of the deck in that area and around the stanchions, the one at the head seems especially prone to leaking. I'm sure there's other things but we got bit on the bulkheads when we bought our boat. Watch your surveyor like a hawk and make sure he/she is doing a thorough job.

Suggest you search on this Forum for this topic, as there have been other threads on this.

You'll probably get an answer here from someone who has the older RL70C, but if not then call Raymarine customer support re the chips. They can tell you what kind of chips it uses. Leave a name and number if you go to voicemail, and they will promptly call you back as soon as you come up in the queue. Once you know the type chip needed, then West Marine and others will probably be able to sell them to you.

Good luck on your purchase.

It's a great boat. Mine is technically a M 1.5-the hull of a M1 and the interior of a MII. After 10 years I had to rebed all 3 ports in the hull. Several stantions and chain plates have also leaked and have been rebedded, but for an older boat that is to be expected. Things are gradually being upgraded.
