have been afraid This would happen ever since the first time I hauled my boat and saw how vulnerable that Spade rudder looked hanging down almost as far as my keel. I hit an obstobstruction going 4 knots and bent a the rudder a little sideways and a little back. The wheel at the helm cannot be turned more than about 15 degrees I have no steerage. I Will try to get the boat hauled tomorrow to assess, but imI'm assuming a new rudder will be required. Has anyone else replaced their rudder? And if so from where and at what price? and what sort of additional damage should I look for question all help appreciated. Sam

Sorry to hear theat Sam -- Hope you get back in the water soon... I'm no help on a bent rudder - I assume a lot will depend on where and how bad you bend(s) and breaks are.

Sam -
Haven't had the pleasure of encountering that problem (yet!). However, another member here, Vermont Sailor, blogged about doing that during a cruise to the Bahamas last year. You might try sending him a PM and see if he can give you some counsel. If I recall correctly, he got a replacement from Foss Foam.

The rudder can be removed and the shaft straightened - this may or may not work for you (YMMV)

Do I have experience with a bent rudder. I took possession of a 1985 Catalina 30 in 1993 in St. Simmons, Ga. on Christmas eve. My plan was to motor up the ICW to Beaufort, SC. One the way up we went a ground on Christmas Eve night. Sea Tow came out and pulled us off the sand bar and bent the rudder shaft. The next day we limped up to Savannah, Ga. and had the rudder shaft pulled while in the water. The machine shop cut off the bent section of the rudder post and left enough of a stub to have a new post welded on it. Don't know how much it cost as Sea Tow paid for everything. I had the 30 for another 10 years after that with no problems with the rudder. That's my story and I'm stick'n to it.

Ruddercraft makes a replacement for Catalinas.
A new rudder from Foss Foam cost us $2,080 last year. $175 to crate and $150 to ship in 2016. They also had the best price and turn around time, last year
I dealt with Bob Walker at Foss Foam. He was great to deal with and they were very fast. We had a three week turn around to Nassau, Bahamas.
I have another friend with a Catalina 36 that also replaced their rudder last summer. They also had their rudder damaged when being pull from being grounded and used Foss Foam. There are others in this forum that have recommended Foss Foam and it is where I first heard of them.
