AirCon & Generator

hi all

yes, there are a number of old posts about a/c and generators, but I am looking for up-to-date information.

we live in Hong Kong, where it gets extremely hot and humid, thus the admiral has requested an A/C system in the boat.

I would like to know which systems you have installed, pros and cons, advice, etc. also for the generator

thanks for the help

Are you looking for a permanent installation? If so, it seems that most have either a MarineAir or a Mermaid, each about 16000 BTU. Can you get access to one in Hong Kong? There has been much discussion about the Honda 2000. The issue is wether the 2000 can start up the AC. It seems that some will and some will not. I understand that a modification can be made to the AC(adding a capacitor?) to help in starting up the AC. Once started, the 2000 is powerful enough to keep it running. The other alternative is to hook up two 2000 units. I have no experience with that or with hatch units.

Thanks for the reply David

Yes, we would like it to be permanent
Getting the unit delivered to HK would not be an issue, my concern is to make sure I fully understand what I am going to do, as I want to avoid fighting with the chinese mechanic....

I am insterested to get more details on the setup for the capacitor, thats sounds like a great idea

I have a 16k flagship marine unit out of Florida. Starts and works off my Honda 2000 but if a/c on don't count on running much else, maybe a tv but nothing with big draw ie. bat charger, microwave, water heater, coffe maker. We manage fine at anchor you just need to no what you r doing.

Good points, made with pretty stock components, I blew a relay recently and was able to buy replacements at Grainger Supply, easy install refer to Tom Senators article in archives. Customer service could be better, Do Not use a Mermaid Condensator to suck evaporated water out of boat, causes unit to overheat and shut down. Don't ask how I know this, this unit needs to put 5 gal per minute overboard to cool compressor. Any questions ask!

Hi Chic

Thanks for the information, out of curiosity, do you have any special setup for the Aircon to start from the generator?

I must admit that I was not aware that the AirCon would require twice as much power at the start, so I am looking for options

Also, how noisy is your Generator?
I have not been able to find anyone around here with one of these, thus i cannot assess before buying it, I just dont want to end up with an extremely noisy beast while trying to sleep.
