A new chapter is about to begin

Ahoy, all. Those of you that have followed our blog for our long cruises will note that we do not purely sail hardly at all, and I estimate we motor-sail perhaps 40-50% of the time for an often marginal gain in speed (albeit a big gain in self-esteem at having a sailboat with sails up). The other times, it is pure motoring.

So, while losing our ability to occasionally turn the engine off and enjoy the purity of sailing, moving to a power boat will remove our deeper draft and high mast clearance requirements. For the next several years, to be sure, we will greatly benefit from a power boat for our cruising, so we have the Catalina 36 for sale and have already purchased a PDQ 34 power catamaran.

The photo shows a sister ship, since we do not have good photos of the exterior of our boat yet.

I retire at the end of Dec 2014 and we will bring the boat across to our west coast FL home dock in early Jan. About 1 Apr, we will set out for another grand adventure.

We have a rough schedule planned around statistical weather patterns so we expect to get to the lower Chesapeake early May, then heading up the Hudson around 1 Jun. We plan to take the Erie and Oswego canals, cross the lake to the Rideau canal to Ottawa, then down the Ottawa River to Montreal, out the entire St. Lawrence Seaway, and then explore the Canadian Maritime provinces before hitting Maine around mid-August. At the end of Sep, we will be putting the boat in storage up there for the winter and getting back to our home in FL.

The next spring, around mid-May, we will resume our cruise through New England, go back up the Hudson, Erie/Oswego canals, and then cross the lake to do the Trent-Severn waterway into the Georgian Bay. From there it will be the North Channel, Lake Michigan, Chicago, and down the rivers to Mobile and then across the Gulf to home.

Clearly a really nice boat for looping!  Good luck.

Hi Duane

Looks like a great adventure.  The Trent-Severn waterway is on our bucket list, just not in a Catalina 36.

I would like to point out you are missing one cruising area that we love, Lake Champlain.  Of course I am a little prejudice, we live and sail on Lake Champlain.  Since you are planning on doing the Erie Canal twice you should do one of your transits to Canada via Lake Champlain.  Instead of taking a left turn at Waterford, NY off the Hudson to the Erie Canal, head north to the Champlain Canal to Lake Champlain and exit north on the Richelieu Canal to the town of  Sorel on the St Lawerance. It is then 40 miles south to Montreal.

Here are live views of the Adirondack mountains in NY, across the lake, from Burlington Vermont. You can’t find a much more scenic waterway, the lake between the mountains.

Thank you, Nile, for the suggestion and photos. It is truly beautiful up there.

Well, folks, it has been a grueling few months finding and fixing way more problems on our 'new' boat than the surveyor or I found on our pre-purchase inspection. But, like eating an elephant, I just took it one 'bite' at a time and now we are really close to being ready.

We finally sold the Catalina 36 just a few weeks ago and after making some agreed-upon repairs, she left our dock just days ago. We will miss her, but retain our many good memories. As an aside, I had modified that boat to be a really good long-distance cruiser, and who should buy her but someone who will almost certainly never go more than 20 miles from the dock.

Starting 27 Mar, our local club has a cruise a few hours south of us that is basically on our route to start the Great Loop so we will use that as our starting date. I won't likely be checking in here much, but you are welcome to follow our adventure on our blog.

Fair winds, all!

Good luck Duane!

If it's any consolation, I'm not just in the process of outfitting Chinook for long-distance cruising, and reading your blog for inspiration for my trip up and down the east coast.  :)

Ahoy, all. Despite no longer checking in at this wonderful site very often, I wanted to report that we completed the first season of our wonderful cruising adventure to and through the NE portion of Canada and New England.

We had just a few mechanical issues plague us, but they were resolved in short order. I will summarize by saying it was an amazing time and we are so glad we did that. With it being so far, however, we doubt we would do it again by boat.

If you didn't take the opportunity to follow along on our blog, you can at lest read the statistics of the journey. See the signature for the blog link.

As I so often did while I was commodore and writing for the Mainsheet, I implore you to think about how you can make your dreams a reality while you still have your health. None of us is getting any younger.
