Matthew - I live on Long Island in Northport. If you have any suggestions for us, we'd appreciate it.

Tim:
Some short cruises from where you are: Heading out east, Mt. Sinai is a cozy little place to stop over for the night (Ralph's Fishing Station has guest moorings), and pretty much the last harbor on the north shore (I've never tried Mattituck, I'm told its beautiful, but I understand that it has silted up and is awaiting redredging). From there, into the various waters between the eastern forks of LI, there's Coecle's Harbor in Shelter Island and Three Mile Harbor on the South Fork, and Sag Harbor (that's where our boat lies). To the north, Mystic Seaport is a great place to visit for a night or two; the price of dockage includes admission to the Seaport Museum (which you get to explore at night after hours, too!), Stonington Ct. is a very pleasant visit as well. And of course, continuing further, Block Island (but plan to get there early, especially on weekends, if you want a mooring), Dutch Harbor in Narragansett Bay, and Newport are all fun to visit.
We're new owners as well (we cruised on a C27 before getting our C36 last fall). Where did you get your boat (wondering if it was one of the ones we looked at?)
Regards -
UPDATED MAY 2013 -
Got into Mattituck Harbor for a night. Absolutely beautiful passage up the creek, and wasn't too tricky; just watch the depth gauge carefully.

Matthew - thanks for the great tips. I added these places to my list. I have also heard that Mattituck is nice. I spoke to them and they said that except at very low tide, that a Catalina36 should have no problems getting in and out.
I would really like to try Mystic because I think the kids would love it. But need to find some shorter trips for the first couple of attempts. Perhaps we will do Mount Sinai per your suggestion.
I bought my boat at Willis Marine in Huntington - how about you? Let me know if you ever get to Northport!

Matthew,
I am going to do my first overnight trip on the boat this weekend. I will leave work a little early on Friday and sail with a buddy across the sound to Norwalk, CT. We'll find a place to eat in town and spend the night on the boat. We'll leave the next morning and head up the CT coast and try out the spinnaker for the first time! We'll head back for sundown in Northport.
Really looking forward to it - Tim
