Well, after 30 years, it might be time. The fridge (Alder Barbour ColdMachine 100) hums like it is running, but not gettting cold.
Maybe freon...maybe replacement.
Any thoughts / options / costs?
Would appreciate your thoughts!

I did the novakool LT201-rt4 in my 2001 MK II. I love it. I spent 6 weeks in the bahamas in 2025 on the hook the whole time and with 400 watts of solar never ran out of power, even on shady or rainy days. It has settings from 1-7, and on setting 3 when I first installed it some water bottles I had in the box started to freeze. I eventually put a wooden barrier across the cooler, and on the freezer box side I can freeze meats and stuff, its about 20 degrees. Its about 40-45 on the fridge side. And in the cooler box itself, I put a little door on it, and it runs between 0 and 5 degrees. I can keep ice cream in the box even. This is at setting 6. I never need to go to setting 7.
I found the installation pretty easy. Did it myself. The freezer box fits very well where the old one was. I did have to make the holes between the port locker and the cooler compartment a bit larger for the pre-filled lines to go through. I used home depot expanding fire proof foam to seal them once they were installed, and it sealed no problem. The compressor unit fits well on the shelf in the port locker the old one was on. The lines to the cooler were longer than necessary so I coiled them under the shelf and then fixed the coil to the bottom of the shelf.
My compressor was shot when I bought the boat, so I can't say how much better it works than the old one, but from reading old posts about the original fridges barely being able to keep beer cold I am assuming this one works way better.

Thanks very much!
I will check it out!

We replaced our Cold Machine several years with the then current, updated model. It was an easy like for like exchange. The only problem was removing the old caulking/sealant on the original install. We only had around 200 watts of solar. The new system drew about 1.7 amp hours. We had added an inch of insulation on the interior of the box.
