My water heater is leaking coolant. As I only use hot water when I'm plugged in at my dock can I bypass the coolant hoses to the heater (force 10 I believe).

Since the elecrtic heat is provided through an element that protrudes into the inside of the tank it should work fine without the coolant running through it, but I'd rely on someone with more expertise than me. My concern being that a leak from the coolant tubes might be a precursor to a total breakdown of the continuity of the tank, including the water portion.

Bill, I had that problem. The antifreeze would leak and crystalize near the macerator. I decided to replace the water heater and the heating hoses. In doing this I noticed that the leak was from the antifreeze hoses that was connected to the water heater, all that was needed was to tighten the clamps. These connections are visible only if you remove the cabinet that is below the sink. Check that first.

Thanks Kevin and Haro for your responses. Spoke to my mechanic, List Marine, Sausalito. He said no problem in by-passing the water heater since I only use it while plugged in at the dock. Max 1 hour of labor. Can be done at my dock. At my age, 77, I rely on pros to do all labor. A question for you both, after how many engine hours do you perform a full service on your M35. Over the last 13 years of ownership I have been having it done annually. However my useage has been limited. This year about 60 hours all on SFBay. Thanks, Bill

Yes it can be bypassed at the engine block at the water pump and one hour is a reasonable time, you have a good mechanic.
I have owned my 99 C36 with M35B for 16 years and never had anyone touch the engine except myself. There has been no problem, it had been a very reliable engine. It has 1690 hours at this time.i perform all regular maintenance.
