I need to remove the wheel so that I can get at the wiring in the pod that contains the fuel guage, tach, hour meter, etc. But I have a still-functioning ST-4000 autopilot attached to the wheel. What am I getting myself into trying to detach all that so I can remove the wheel? How difficult is it?

I believe it is as simple as removing the power supply to the motor and assembly will come off with wheel.

IIRC, 3 attachment points each with 2 machine screws. Then just set the assembly to the side. It slips over a peg that acts as a reaction bar, but it should be a slip fit with no fasteners. All an all, it should take less than 5 minutes.

On mine, I pull back the rubber booth on the back of the motor and unplug the plug. No tools needed. To remove the wheel I use steering puller.

About Sail La Vie
On our Catalina 36MKII it is not needed to have the steering-wheel removed to get to the wiring inside the pod. With the over length of cabling it is possible to maneuvre the cover with the meters through the wheel and you have full access to cabling etc.

Thanks all. What a great group. I'll give this a try next time I'm up at the boat.
