Galley / aft cabin 'window'

Question; what's the purpose of the sliding 'window' between the galley and the Aft cabin? Just ventilation?

Thanks,

Darn, you raised way too many questions...
-Check in on the guests sleeping in late?
-Voyeurism on the water?
-Allows quick access to warm beer stored on the back shelf?
Improve aft cabin air circulation?

That's funny Peter !
My guess it's improved ventilation as the rear berth was designed to have folks sleeping with their heads sleeping towards the bow and toes pointing towards the stern. At least that's the answer I received from factory folk when I asked the question why there is padding on the ceiling in that area. Talk about claustrophobic !

As I understand it, that sliding window is a crucial part of the boat. It permits grandchildren to spy on a grandparent in the galley, who is making either blueberry pancakes or chocolate chip cookies!

It also allows the same grandparent to reach through and tickle the grandchild.

It also permits that same grandparent to reach through and release the little latch there on the port side corner of the aft engine cover.

I'm with the folks who can't figure out a good reason for that window. If you try to store any of the "stuff" that accumulates on a boat on the shelf behind the window, it flies all over when you heal.

To make this space usable, this is what I did (picture included but due to lighting it's not very clear). There is a wooden lip around the overhead that covers about half of that shelf (this itself was a topic of a prior post as no one seemed to know what it was for). I got white, leatherette type material from a fabric shop. I then got snap-on clips
(the kind used on many dodgers), screwed them into the overhead lip and into the edge of the aforementioned shelf.

I  punched holes in the Leatherette material and fastened the clip caps onto the material. I then clipped the leatherette curtain onto the two wooden sections (overhead and on the shelf). I can now store things on the shelf that I need to reach quickly such as my WD40, wipe-down rag, etc. and they stay in place. The curtain easily snaps off when I need to access the engine.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the information and the humor!  So it seems the 'window' serves no critical function - kind of what I was thinking.  Since its not needed, I removed it and installed a microwave there instead.  I had planned to install the microwave in the cupboard where most everyone else installs a microwave, but the Admiral nixed that idea as she would be losing valuable cupboard space.

I've attached 2 photos showing the front and the back of the installation.  I think installing it there was easier than it would have been installing it in the cupboard.

We did the same thing a few years back (freed up space on the counter).   One suggestion to consider:  The shelf in the aft cabin that you have put the microwave on can get pretty hot (at least ours does) from the exhaust pipe just below.  We suspended our microwave oven from the box above, using a couple of metal straps, which leaves a little bit of an air gap below.

Matthew,

Thanks for the heads-up..  I haven't seen that shelf getting hot (but then I haven't looked either) so I'll keep an eye on it.

So far, we really like having the microwave there - even the Admiral.

If you are interested in having the original material doors, I have a set you can have for the asking. Send me a personal message here on the forum.
