Bad Exhaust Riser Catalina Direct

I replaced the original exhaust riser on my 2000 MKII 2 years ago.  Got the replacement from Catalina Direct. Less than a year later - under 50 hours, I noticed a small hole in the riser.  I got in touch with Catalina Direct who, got in touch with the manufacturer.  CD wouldn't replace it, but they said the manufacturer may if they deemed it a defect, but I'd have to return it to CD, then they would return it to manufacturer, then upon inspection they may replace it.  They had no idea how long it would take, but a couple months was not out of the question.  I don't want to be without my boat for 2 months, so that's really not worth it to me.  I may look into a welder, or just buy another and suck it up. (I don't have the time to build one myself, as I've seen some members here have done)  I'm curious if anyone here has had a similar issue with a CD replacement riser before I get another or try to fix this one...

I recall reading in the forum a while back a post from another member who had a CD riser that didn't last very long as well, but I can't find it.     In any event, a stainless riser should certainly last longer than 2 years.
I know you said you don't have time to build one out of pipe nipples and fittings, but its really not that hard a job to do.  I did mine out of Schedule 80 seamless stainless pipe, which took a bit of time and money to source, but maybe as a stop-gap measure you could throw one together from ordinary black pipe and fittings from a local plumbing supply or big box store (the only odd pieces you would need are the gasket for the flange and the water injection tee (available here: https://shop.toadmarinesupply.com/ships_store/index.php?p=details&ident=143516&mfc=Universal&sku=299693&prod_name=NIPPLE%2CEXHAUST+WATER+INJECTED&sectionid=Universal%20Parts
That would enable you to keep sailing while waiting for CD to get you a replacement....

I agree, I think it's an easier job than I thought. I think i'll give it a shot.  Thanks for taking the time.

You may be right... it's not terribly complicated and a self build may be the way to go....  Probably faster and better in the long run than a replacement. Thanks for the info.

Hey Jake
Where are you located?
My father in law just fabricated one for me from scratch, did an amazing job.

It would seem a good weld shop could repair this. No matter what your solution is, the elbow will have to be removed so you may as well explore the weld shop option. Also, see if they can measure thicknesses at a variety of points to determine if this is a localized weakness or the entire pipe is undersized in thickness.

The follow  up:  I did find a welder and he put a solid patch around that section.  He also said that stainless pipe on the riser from Catalina Direct is really just too thin.  So, my advice to anyone looking to replace the riser is to just build one as so many of the folks in this group have done.
