The mast on my 1991 Mark 1.5 is currently pulled during a standing rigging replacement. There are a number of areas on the mast adjacent to stainless steel fittings that are corroded. The mast is painted white. I plan to remove the fittings by drilling out the rivets, remove the corrosion, probably with a wire wheel or an orbital sander, spot paint the areas and reseat the fittings using appropriate material between the fitting and the mast and rerivetting with stainless steel rivets.
I would appeciate any advice particularly concerning what combination of primers and paints to use . I didn’t find any particular reference to painting over aluminum spars on the WEst Marine site. I’m hoping to just buy a rattle can or two to do the final coat. There are probably 8 to 10 spots to treat. Thanks!
After the corroded aluminum is cleaned up, treat the exposed surfaces with Alodine or a Chromate conversion coating so that paint will adhere. Otherwise, the new paint will flake off within a very short time.

This looks like a nice example of galvanic corrosion.
Without proper attention and action to isolate the different materials you can do what you want but the problem will come again. Most the time sooner than you expect to see the first signs of blistering on the coating.
Tefgel and sika are materials which could be very helpfull to improve the isolation. Only attention to the paint-system is not sufficient.

Thanks very much for the replies . Assuming I’ve got the primer surface prep done any recommendations on the final paint? Thanks again.
Hi,
I did the same job some five years ago. Have a complete report of the work done (Spanish) with pictures, but it looks to big to upload here...Will try to send you a PM.
