Catalina 36 height

Hi folks, I am happy new owner of Catalina C36 MKII. I will have many questions to you as I`m from Poland and this beauty will be transported over here most probably by RoRo, less probably by us. First question which I have is whats the exact transportation height from keel bottom to cabin top with mast lying down? My version is deep fin keel. Best wishes, Kamil

Hello Kamil,

OK, I am going to bite...   You paid only 5KUSD for a 2001 Catalina36?   Perhaps you meant 50K?   Sorry I do not know the hieght, although this is dependent on the keel she has.

You need to define the type of keel (fin or wing) and the rig type: tall or standard.

Fin Keel with draft 5' 10" (based on photos)
As for the rig I can just guess... Most probably I will see the boat for the first time after it arrives in Poland
Maybe the photos will say a little bit more: https://www.auctiontime.com/listings/other-items/auctions/online/3032650...(link is external)

If you know height of both of the rigs I would be thankful, I will use the higher one

Thanks,
Kamil

By scalinng the brochure image- the bottom of the fin keel to the cabin top measures about 10 feet. Add in what ever height the keel blocks would contribute- probably another foot. From the bottom of the fin keel to the top of the bow pulpit (when in place) is about 12 feet. The mast to ground height looks like it would measure about 11- 11 1/2 feet. Looks like you have a real project boat. This web site should be helpful to your rebuild efforts. Feel free to send photos and updates on your progress as they would be interesting. The boat clearly took a pounding it would also be interesting to see how the keel-to-hull joint held up.

Thank you! If somebody has access to manual maybe there will be written exact height because I need to arrange transportation from Newton, AL to Jacksonville, FL...

I will keep updating but first I need get it to Poland in one piece and for reasonable money.

Is there any user living nearby Newton?;)

Catalina 36s are routinely trucked around the United States.  According to this thread the height is around 12': https://www.catalina36.org/forum/general-discussion/honest-height-keel-p...

Here is a picture of a fin keel version loaded on a semi-tractor trailer: https://www.catalina36.org/sites/default/files/forum/168119_187230541296...

I would recommend checking out the boat in person before spending money to truck it somewhere.  Unless the water inside hull was promptly pumped out and the engine checked and the oil changed it may be too expensive to fix these and the other issues shown in the pictures (rudder, furler & stanchions).

Good luck!

EDIT: I read "Portland" as in Oregon, USA - you are in Poland

wow, not sure what the boat situation is over there, but wow. Try to part out locally, take a vacation here. Have you priced a RoRo? OUCH.
Not trying to be rude, but cut your losses.

Over the road trucking - 3-5K IF you can find anyone willing - who will prep the boat??? IF you can they will have you declare it scrap as to avoid any liability on the haulers part. The hatches are missing - more rain water and more problems as you go....and on and on... Now load to a RORO? MORE $$$, storage until RORO, MORE $$$. I  hope you knew all this.

Poland,  Europe ;)

I was thinking about visiting USA by myself but visa application formalities are little time consuming.
I already have the professional person to prepare the boat for transportation. For road trucking I contacted jouleyacht.com and they are willing to transport to the port for under 2k$. RoRo to Germany with shipping cradle building included is another 7.5k$.

Today after inspection report I will decide if it's worth it.

That shipping sounds reasonable, very reasonable actually...

Not sure how good you are with metalwork, but the pushpit and pulpit parts are still aviable from US vendors....might be better to get the parts onboard and fill the boat up prior to transport....

Good luck with the report...keep the posts going!

I think you raise a great point- fill it with replacement stanchions, lifelines, new rudder, hatches, wheel, pulpits, stays. roller furling and all the other replaceables now prior to shipping. Catalina Direct is a great replacement source for these most of these things.

Wow this is an amazing fixeruper, Kamil I give you a lot of credit.   I hope you are young :)   Not to sound discouraging but I tire just looking at the pictures.

Looking forward to seeing it progress.

Filling up with OEM replacement parts is fantastic idea.  Could save you a lot of time & frustration.  The down side could have some additional complications going through customs in Europe.  One thing to consider is the health of the boat users after you rebuild boat.  Black mold will be in every crevasse and impossible to get rid of.  Many people are highly sensative to breathing moldy air and over night sleepy in the boat cabin will be a challenge.
keep us posted.  I do have some 1995 Catalina 36 manuals for free from my crash boat.  Look for an early posting on this website.  Probably weigh 5 kg.  You send the prepaid courier label and I can ship to you.

Thanks! I think I will just buy membership on this website to have access to these -it might get pricey to ship it to Poland.

That's a great  idea! You will get access to the original manuals for boat and engine, as well as the entire Members-only technical library. If you join for 3 yrs you will receive a CD-ROM with many years of illustrated technical articles.

Good luck with your boat!

Thanks for all the help guys. I've been busy with organizing transportation. Actually, we want to see the boat & equipment first, to see what can be recovered and what cannot. Boat had more than 1,000 gallons of water inside. My guy just told me that the engine is ready to go! It's Universal M35BC.

I have a question to you, why could be that this Cata doesn't have lower windows? Was it an option?

I will update with some photos after pumping water out etc.

Best,
Kamil

Just looked at the pictures from your original post, and saw the hull is flooded....I think I'll say WOW again.

All MKII have hull portlights, not typical for Catalina to do anything 'custom' - so very odd. The early 36's (pre MKII) did not have the portlights.

Have you taken on a project like this before? I have, but it was a fraction of the work you are committing to.

What I learned - was an EXPENSIVE mistake.

My dad is captain, I will be working with him, under his command to finish this yacht. Purchase was confirmed by him in the first place. Most of the work we will do by ourselves. Then there will be laminate friend, electrician uncle etc...

Kamil-
Now that I see the pictures, it is odd that their are no hull windows. They were not optional to my knowledge. Can only offer a guess. Maybe the origional owner custom ordered the boat without them, or they were removed and the openings were glassed over at some point. If the later is the case, you should be able to see some evidence on the hull or the interior liner.

Since my thread was referenced I'll add to this.

My boat was exactly 13ft, 2" from the top of the pulpit to the ground when loaded on my trailer. The keel step is 14" off the ground, so my initial estimate of around 12ft tall on the boat was pretty much spot on.

You shouldn't have any issues finding a company to move your boat based on the height.

I would recommend these guys:

The biggest problem as so far is the width... Manual shows Beam as wide as 11' 11". In Europe over 11' 6" needs specialized escort car and over 11' 10" two cars... Could anybody confirm if it is true value?

Thanks!

My 1984 Mk I was 11' 11" wide. The marina measured it frequently with plumb lines, etc, counting the rub rail and so on.

I have a 1995 model year MKII, and my beam is 11'11".  My guess is yours is the same.

11' 10" is the exact width of the boat. In Texas anything over 12ft wide requires escort cars too, and we're just under that.

Thanks guys, I passed over 11' 11" for safety. Wish EU wasn't so requiring.

The link to the auction site doesn't seem to be working. I would love to see this boat.... Can you post the pics again?

Thx

Wow! Thanks for the pictures. I can't wait to see how this project progresses! In your estimation, the cost to ship it to your home port in Poland, cost to repair and re-equip is still more economical than buying a similar boat that is ready to go? This forum will be an invaluable resource for you. Please post every step of this journey, and best of luck to you.

No problem, as soon as I will get my hands on her I will make some nice photo documentation on every step. It seem like very much good deal, I will be able to say more after it will arrive, as I have no idea whats up with electronics etc.
