Attaching a New Furling Headsail Question

Hello all. My old headsail got torn up by a storm, so I put on a new headsail furling jb today. It's an Ullman sail made specifically for a Cat 36. A friend on the dock who is an "old salt" assisted me. When we got the sail mounted and raised it, we found that if you raise the swivel to the very top, the loop on the tack which is supposed to be attached to the furling drum is about a foot short. I suggested that perhaps we should attach the loop at the tack and just raise the swivel as far as it will go. My friend insisted that the swivel must be all the way up as far as it will go and that we should instead run heavy cordage between the loop on the tack and the furling drum which we then did. I admit this is the first headsail I've mounted and I never paid much attaention to how far up the swivel used to be on the old sail. However, I DO know from photos of the bow that the tack was directly attached to the furling drum. SO, my question is, must the swivel go all the way up to the top of the mast or would it be OK if it were about a foot short of the top since this would then allow me to attach the tack directly to the furling drum. I realize this may be a dumb question, but I'd appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thanks!

Michael, The corrrect answer is that the upper swivel is suppost to be no more that 6 " from the top of the mast. If it is too long then you will get over-wrap, that is the swivel will wrap and the jib will not and it becomes a mess. On mine it came with a pendnat that was about 12" long and I placed that at the top so that the upper swivel was raised as much as possible since I was getting this over-wrap intermittantly.
You can place the pendant at the bottom if you like instead.
You can download the installation manual here  https://www.schaefermarine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/JibFurlingInstallationInstructions.pdf
and look at page 11 to see what happens if the upper swivel is set too low.
Since I made this adjustment I have not had any more problems.

Thanks for your response Haro. Since I made the original post I have done some research and learned about pennants and such. I think I'll be fine and thanks for the link.
