Has anybody had problems/ negative experiences installing one of these? I’m planning to put one in soon and am wondering if there is something to look out for.

I have had no problem with it. I installed it over 200 hours ago. Only recently I noticed wetness near the weephole. I replaced the seals for about $50.00. I have several posts on this topic. To locate them enter my name in the search window.

My only “warning” is if the studs are loose coat the threads that go into the block with permitex #2.
I replaced my -7 with a O-ring version of the -15.
Very happy no greasing the pump every 10hrs and can check impeller without requiring a new gasket. Also no worries about adapter falling in engine or getting miss-timed

Wally;
I think you'll gain quite a bit by reading previous posts regarding the Oberdorfer water pump. Mine is at 700 hours and still going strong. If I were you, I would buy the kit that contains the new smaller hose elbows, (you'll need these as you old sherwood elbows are too large) plus new hold down flanges and new new high tensle strength screws - rather than just the pump assembly. You'll find several models that can & will nicely replace the exsisting Sherwood pump.I'm using the two stud model (no grinding nescessary) and it perfectly fits my M-35.
You might want to talk with Cardinal Pump in St. Louis, MO at https://www.cardinalpump.com/ (314) 628-0100. Tell them you are with the Catalina 36 forum and they'll throw in free shipping (or at least they used to).
Last picture shows the part number for the kit I referenced above.

I installed the Oberdorf last season, M35 AC, because of the easy access to the impeller. No problems so far, purchased spare impeller and gasket but haven's install them.

Ordered the pump. I got the complete kit. A couple of questions:
1. Is it necessary to use gasket cement for pump to block connection?
2. I have the original intake/outlet hoses on my Sherwood. Are the nipples in the kit the correct sizes? I see in older posts that there is some confusion about the hoses being different diameters.
thanks all

I installed the oberdorfer when the base had to be modified and it did not come with the hose connectors. The incoming water is 1/2" and the out going is 5/8".
So I purchased the right size adapters.
The mounting base does not require any type of paste. Use paper thin gasket so that they mate as much as possible.

i didn’t put gasket sealer on the gasket when I put mine on. I did coat the bolts (studs were gone) with permitex #2 as stated above. No leaks yet.

OK, replaced the pump this weekend. Went well BUT, one complaint: the brass “ears” that hold the pump body to the block are too short on one side. Looking at the engine from the front, the left bracket will only engage the pump shoulder if turned to approximately 45deg. This leaves only a corner of the bracket holding that side of the pump. The other one is fine. Poor engineering.

Did these "L" shaped mounting brackets come with the pump or are you using the ones that were on the old pump originally.
Try switching them from left to right. They may not be the same size.
Let us know if that helped to help others with htis problem.
It may be a good idea to let the manufacturer know to modify their part.
Here is how I modified and installed mine http://mei1970.org/saillavie/c36album/

They are the same, no left and right if you will. I got the “kit” which includes new brackets and they are the same as the original. Looking at the Sherwood pump, you can see that the bracket in question had the same issue as the paint shows that it was only held by a corner.
I plan on dropping a note to Oberdorfer.
