Just wondering where the cutless bearing tool is located now. I would like to replace my prop shaft if possible which requires removing the cutless. My boat is on the hard now to replace transmission and prop so half the work is already done. I would have the yard do this but they are fairly busy so I may have to do this job myself or just keep the old bronze shaft until the end of the season when I have the time. So just trying to determine how long to get hold of this tool. Thanks.

Did you fill out the Borrow a Tool request form under Members->Toolbox->Borrow a Tool. I still have the keel bolt kit waiting to send to the next lucky person - hopefully before I move (which is in the next 18 months).

Assuming that you have pulled your transmission and prop, it might be interesting to see if the shaft could slide forward enough to give access to the cutlass bearing.

Will the shaft come out?

If the shaft has to be replaced - you can always use a recip saw to cut the bronze one into chunks. Then use all thread and pieces of pipe to pull the cutlass out. Or ask they yard to borrow their puller if it is a matter of not having the labor available.

If you remove the cutlass bearing, the shaft should clear the rudder (it did on our boat; I took it over to a prop shop for truing and machining for a new split coupling).

Turns out the yard did get to pulling the cutless. No need for the tool at this time. Now I wait for my new SS prop shaft, trans, and prop to get back to work. Thanks.
