My new to me C36 needs a new main. Quoted Precision and North Sails. Precision sails best price. Thinking loose foot, one reef, one full batten and rest partial. Any input well appreciated.

I bought a Main Sail from Mack Sails last spring and a jib two years ago. Chick Lasser who is a member /owner of a C36 is a representative of Mack Sails. He got me a good price and good service from Mack. A week after I recieved my main sail I went on a 500 mile cruise to Cuba and back from Florida via the Gulf of Mexico and across the Florida Straights. We had winds as high as 37mph according to the NOAA. The sails preformed great.

Hi,
We been using North sails for a while, Pentex/dyneema laminated with triradial cut. Indeed they a are not cheap but from my point of view they worth the price. They main is now 8 years old and shape remain the same even when blowing hard, of course the cloth shows the age. Genoa was replaced last year with a Quantum polyester laminated and...not happy at all. So we will return to North dyneema laminated when possible...
Some times we spend significant amount of € in other items and tend to forget the main "engine" of our
boats.
My opinion, do not buy "a price" buy a sail.
Kind regards

My 2 cents; If you have a 135 Genoa with roller furling, a single reef main will probably work for most situations. Though not the cheap way out, a Doyle Stack Pack is convenient: lazy jacks guide the sail when dropping it and the cover then zips shut.

Sorry don't know your name... might want to add that to the site.
Anyway.... my friends bought a job and mainsail from Precision. The jib worked out OK but the main was a disaster.....had to send it back 3 times and they lost a whole summer without it. Its complicated by the fact that they are in Canada and whatever gets shipped to you from them has to go thru customs... their sail got held up in Customs for a couple of weeks at a time, combined with they have the sail made overseas some where so there is a time delay there.
My friends main was a mast furling main and that was a major part of the problem (the first sail was too heavy to roll into the mast among other issues).... if yours is a traditional, Precision may be less of a problem for you but, everything considered, I'd suggest going to someone you can easily go back to. I know my friends would definitely not recommend them.
