Wood Box

I have bought a 2000 Catalina 36 mk 2.  In the after stateroom on the overhead and close to the forward bulkhead toward the port side is a teak box which has been covered with a vinyl cover.  We have not been able to get into it.  We were able to free one side, but revealed another box with insulation around it.  We do not want to break into for fear of destroying what ever is inside.  Can somebody enlighten us?

We have a MKI, which is somewhat differently configured in the aft cabin.
But assuming you're describing  the same thing as we  have, what you are looking at is simply the projection of the aft end of galley counter into the aft cabin.
So no need to "break into" it so figure out "what ever is inside"; what's inside is whatever stuff that's currently sitting at the rear of your galley counter, right next to the companionway stairs.

Matthew is correct.

I investigated this on my own boat and determined the same thing: You are looking at the backside of the aft countertop, which is located in the galley.

So in other words, the counter top extends back into the rear double coffin berth.

The padded vinyl cover is just to protect your noggin if bumping into it...

Sorry, nothing has hit it yet.  it is to high to be the end of the galley and separated from the Galley bulkhead by an inch.  It is no more than 2 inches thick and on the overhead of the after cabin.  We have  a Raymarine Autohelm attaching to the wheel.  We can see nothing leading to or from it.  It is a mystery.
thanks you all for your posts.  We have had the boat for a season and finding our way around and really enjoy the boat.  this is the only unknown to this point.

Skip, I have the same year 36 as you and the same wooden box with a padded cover. I have no idea what it is. If you have a fridge line that runs from the fridge box aft then up to the port side of cockpit the line can cause condensation on that wooden box unless the line is insulated.  I have not tried to remove the box since I have a list of other projects .  I would be grateful if you kept me updated on you discovery.

I believe I tried to veiw what was under it at one time, but that was a while ago. It is padded to keep from knocking ones head on it. I also have a light fixture in this corner. I always thought perhaps some sleep athwart ship with ones head on the portside? Padding just protection from a bang.
As to what it is, I believe the icebox extends beyond the countertop and what this box conceals is the bottom of the shelf under the evaporator in the box. It would make sense that it would be insulated. I'll take a closer look this weekend.

Can you take a picture of this mysterious box and post it?

Gary and Matt,
Thanks for the replies.  it does not appear to touching anything but the overhead.  I will try and get a picture this weekend.  I am still getting to know the boat and this is one of the last things I have not figured out.

Well, I can say that it is not the icebox that is involved. It runs parallel to the icebox. It is definitely under the counter that is recessed behind the cockpit bulkhead. Whether the fiberglass liner has a recess that allowed for the counter to be installed the way it is I have no idea. Depth and width are just about the same as that section of the counter. Do not believe anything is there and why such an elaborate box I am unsure. Cover is just to protect a head.

Just checked it out on my 2004.  It's simply the underside of the counter space above the trash bin that projects into the aft cabin.  Looks like the cover is just to either dress it up, protect you, or protect it.

Here is a picture.  It is up against the side which I think is the cockpit locker.  The refrigeration coils are under the shelf in the locker and go down through the floor of the cockpit locker.  My next step is take off the plywood cover over the fuel tank and look forward and see if there is anything that come through that bulkhead.  More important projects first.  Having trouble attaching the picture I took with my iphone.

You may be right, I was thinking it was above the counter, but looking at your picture, that may be it.  Currently out of town and be home tomorrow to follow up.  Thanks you it has been bugging me and something so simple.  One more mystery solved.

When I redid our counter top 6 years ago to corian. We had the padded box as well. Ours was there to help cover and support the section above it of our old Formica countertop.

I think that ends the mystery.  Looking at it, it looked to high until I started taking measurements.  I think I have most my problems figured out now and only have to fix them.  All minor things, but don't want to miss enjoying it on the water as the summer is getting short as it does every year.  Thanks for your post.
