Optimum heel angle for MK1 Catalina 36?

Hi, everyone.  We have started racing the boat, and came in third in our first race so pretty pleased with that.

Does anyone know what is the optimum angle of heel for an MK1?

I've searched the forum but haven't found this number yet.

It appears to me when I am going to windward not much more than 10 degrees of a heel and I usually found I could go about up to 35 degrees off the wind and still maintain a decent speed in 10-15 kts of wind.

I should have also said this is with a winged keel. A buddy has the same boat as me, but with a fin keel, gets closer to the wind than I do  sailing at about the same speed and sails faster than I do if he goes at the same heading as me.

We have roller furling sails and a wing keel and am rather impressed at how well we point with nearly 15 year old sails.

Agree completely that you don't want to heel too much close hauled - it just slows the boat down.

Sorry. I meant the optimum angle of heel on the inclinometer.  For most boats, this is around 15-20 degrees of heel.  I was just wondering if someone knew the angle for the MK1.  I may contact Catalina on this next.

Ben i also sail a wing MK 1.5.....i find 15 degrees of heel optimum for windward work...as the wind and heel increases,i reef the main, leave the genoa, maintain the same angle of heel..go faster.
Congrats on your win!
