I have been given the go-ahead by the Admiral to purchase a new sail.
Both sails are original (1999) and have a similar amount of wear (moderate, but still reasonably good shape). The issue arose when crossing the strait last weekend in 25+ knots - only 1 reef in the main and no foam luff in the jib... and would have liked to have been reefed a bit more.
So I started getting quotes for a second reef point in main and foam luff in jib... Noticed all stitching needs a look at, etc.
So... since I can only buy one now (the other maybe in 2 yrs).
Which one would you get?? (given similar wear..)

Howard-
I would opt for the Genoa 1st. That's maybe 65%-70% of the boat's horsepower and most important sail. We just purchased one last year from a local sailmaker- Doyle. They tend to run on the high side but have a very good reputation. They advised not using foam in the luff- suggesting a luff rope instead (an internally stitched line)- which we did. The sail wraps on the furler tighter with luff rope....less windage when partially furled or fully wrapped. They also incorporated a sewn- in trim line to help you adjust the jib sheet to the correct point in the deck track- helps achieve proper sail trim. After using this to establish efficient trim, I've also noted that our tracks don't extend as forward as far as they should (with sail > 30% reefed) - which Doyle warned me about.
Our old Genoa was like a bag (Original to the Boat). The new one is flat and we've hit 7-8 knots under 15-20 knots of wind with just the Genoa- from close hauled to a reach. Of course she points higher with the main out too. 406 SQ Ft, 135% Genoa, UV Cover. Sunshade, 7.77 Oz Dacron. $2913 (2013 Price).
Good luck

Thanks Paul;
I have had one quote from Doyle, interesting that it was 8.18 oz dacron and a little less than yours, but in Cdn dollars, so price sure varies...
