Hello everyone,
Getting ready for the sailing season down here and have been doing a bit of routine maintenance. Things are going well so far, but I am getting conflicting information regarding HX zincs. Research suggests that the 2" HX requires longer, narrower zincs and the 3" HX requires shorter, thicker zincs. My HX measures 3" at the end cap AND the PO left replacement zincs on the boat (in the original package from Universal). They are the shorter, thicker variety and the part number on the package matches the replacement parts list inside the lid of the blue plastic Universal box that came with the boat. So far, so good. But, when I went to remove the old zinc the socket that fit my new zinc was too big to fit the head of the old zinc. Odd…Got the correct size socket and discovered that the installed zinc is the longer, thinner variety. Obviously, I need a different zinc to install, but has anyone else seen this conflicting information? Is HX diameter measured the ID or the OD?

Don't think the HX size is the relevant factor here (we replaced our old 2" HX with a 3"HX, the zincs were the same).
The important thing (other than the thread size fitting) is that the zinc is not so long that it hits up against one of the inside tubes when its installed. We buy the generic ones at WM, which are about 1/4" to 1/2" too long, and then cut them down with a hacksaw.

I buy the zinc that screws into the plug and have to cut down till they are about 3/4 in long. You can take the cap off the side of the HX and see how far your zinc will go in

Just closing the loop. My 3" heat exchanger requires the following zinc specs:
1/4" NPT plug, 3/8" diameter pencil zinc, 2 1/2" length. The zinc itself is stamped CM E0 A. As I mentioned before, this does not match the replacement parts list on the Universal Replacement Parts box (inside lid) that came with the boat, nor the actual replacements that were in the box. I'm guessing a PO (there were 2) had the original HX replaced. Anyway, I hope someone else finds this information helpful.
