Great Lakes and VC-17 paint

My bottom was fairly clean again this year with just a thin film of green slime. I just painted the bottom, as I usually do in the fall, with a thin coat of vc-17. It is easier to find a warm October day than it is in March. I was wondering if anyone had ever tried to go two years between coats. I have heard of it but never actually talked to anyone who tried it. The hull, of course, is always power washed when the boat comes out.

Richard, we did it, mostly anyway, with our 28 the last year we had it. Had part of a litre can left from the previous year so just did a foot or two around the waterline and that was it. It did fine, no worse than the year before when we did the whole thing, and certainly way better than the soft ablative we have now. Thinking about switching back to VC17, hate to do it but Horizons is worthless in keeping slime off and that's the biggest problem in our part of the great lakes. VC17 is so slick the slime will peel off but I think soft ablatives with a rougher surface create a lot more area for slime to hold onto and it does not slough off. This year was really nasty.

I had a Douglas 32 out of kingston for 26yrs and only ever applied vc17 every 2 yrs. Had the bottom pressure washed at every haul-out. I never felt the need to apply the vc17 yearly. I'm planning to strip the bottom of my C36 in next couple of years and use vc17. BTW, my D32 hasn't sold yet so if u know of anyone looking for a good boat that needs a little work, send them my way.

We're on Lake Champlain and paint with VC every other year.

Four years ago I had the bottom of my boat stripped, a barrier coat applied and VC-17 applied.

This September, the boat came out of the water and again, the bottom had just a slime on it that was power washed off.

The workers who power washed the hull agreed with me, the bottom looked great and no need to recoat for another year.

Clean, clear, cold water, probably is the reason for the longevity of the bottom paint. Don't take my results as true for everyone. But for me, I will look at the hull again in September 2014.

It's been two seasons for us and I do not see much of a difference. We end up with about the same amount of growth at haulout. It gets powerwashed easily. Note that the weather was much cooler than usual this year.

I might paint this coming spring if I have the time but I do not have this on my "must do" list.

I did not see/feel any performance reduction from the slight amount of growth.
