Hi,
I have seen some discussion of rebuilding our Sherwood raw water pumps. Could you please tell me who will do the rebuild and how much does it typically cost? The question is, is it worth it to rebuild it or just buy a new pump.
Thanks.

Sherwood Raw Water Pump Rebuild
I believe I read that DEPCO pump sells the rebuild parts and will also rebuild the pump for a flat fee. You might want to start with them and please post what you learn here.
Good luck.

If you are at the point of rebuilding the Sherwood pump, you may want to consider purchasing an Oberdorfer replacement pump - see link below -
http://www.c36ia.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2268
The Oberdorfer has cheaper replacemnt parts, impellers, etc. plus allows the inspection and replacement of the impeller from the front, rather than needing to remove the entire pump like the Sherwood.
Myself and Mark (username: "iamav56") were considering a group purchase of the pump to get a cheaper price - let us know if you might be interested - I guess if we got enough members together we could get a real good price?

Sorry, Howard, but I already purchased an Oberdorfer a few weeks ago and did the modification and installation. It has less than an hour of engine time on it, but so far, so good.

I'm in same boat as Duane. Just purchased an oberdorfer pump and replaced my Sherwood with it. Also only a few hours but engine heat is right where is supposed to be.
The mod and install was a piece of cake.

If you are like me, you will not be without a complete spare pump assembly. Right now, I have the newly modified/installed Oberdorfer, but I kept the working Sherwood pump and can reinstall it if needed.
Twice in the past, I have had the Sherwood fail in the seals and/or bearings (bearings failed because I did not take action soon enough when the seals failed). Having just a spare impeller was useless.
If you wind up with a spare Sherwood pump assembly (I had 2 plus the one I kept), however, these could be candidates for a rebuild IF the rebuild cost is reasonable enough. I gave my 2 pumps to a fellow C36/375 officer who plans to tackle the rebuild sometime. He may decide to go in the business! :D

Rebuilding/replacing pump seals is something that many of us have not attempted. I put it off for 13 years! The "easiest" course is to just get a new pump, and I agree that replacing the Sherwood is the way to go.
But (here's the but) it is not rocket science. Given an afternoon, you CAN do it.

This is for an Oberdorfer, but the seals are pretty much the same on a Sherwood.
Or, send it to DEPCO (www.depcopump.com) and have them do it for you.
Good luck.

I asked Depco for a quote on rebuilding the Sherwood and they wanted $275 plus shipping both ways. I have a brand new spare Sherwood but when my existing Sherwood goes I'll get an Oberdorfer, much cheaper and better option I think.
Bud, I assume that includes all the parts. I remember paying a lot more than $275 for my replacement Sherwoods (bought 2!), but I am still glad I went to the Oberdorfer just based on the testimonials alone.

Yes, that was parts included but the shipping was going to add another $90. I bought a brand new Sherwood on eBay for less than $200, got lucky.
I guess now I can say hat I have joined the ranks of those who have forgotten to open the raw water through hull valve before starting the engine at the doc. In my case it was only 1 minute and no damage was done. However, since I had noticed water staring to drip from the weep holes, I decided to replace it with the Oberdorfer that I had already modified and kept on the boat for such a day. This time though I noticed that, comparing the two pumps next to each other, that the tongue that fits into the opening of the engine is about 3/32" shorter than the Sherwood. Has anyone noticed that - and is this a problem since there is not as much of the interlocking taking place. Remember that after adding the thickness of the gasket that this interlocking depth is reduced by the thickness of the gasket. It runs fine now - but is this a problem waiting to happen?

Sorry to read that, Haro, but at least no major problems resulted.
If you are referring to the circular lip that positions the pump on the centerline of the camshaft, then I don't think it is a problem. That is just there for positioning, and once the bolts are tightened, you are fine.

I was actually referring to the amount of slotted male part that is on the pump shaft that is inserted in the rotating slotted shaft that that is on the engine that turns the pump shaft. The amount of mating is 1/2 as much on the Oberdorfer compared to the Sherwood. I will see if I can find drawings and measurements so that I can compare them. More later.

That's curious Haro, because I just finished modifying my Oberdorfer and noticed the opposite issue - it seems the shaft on mine sticks out about 1/8" more than the Sherwood and I was worried it might be a problem, but I think the gasket thickness will make up for that.... haven't installed it yet (next week).
If yours is installed and working fine one should hope that it won't be a problem.

I called Depco recently as I need a spare pump. They will rebuild a Sherwood for you but need the old pump to give you a firm quote. In the end, I bought a new Sherwood (part 42175) for $375.10 from our area supplier TDC in Huntington Beach, CA.

Hi Howard. I measured the distance by placing them such that the end of tongue of one was facing the mounting plate of the other. Or you can measure the depth from the tip of the tongue to the mounting plate. You are right that the gasket makes it even shorter. Let em know how yours fits.
