Sherwood to Oberdorfer

I had my first experience with the Sherwood pump yesterday and am now considering installing an Oberdorfer. I have gone through most of the posts and it seems like some many conversions require modifications to the flange on the pump. I have an M25XPB and I am wondering if there is a Oberdorfer pump that is a direct replacement for the Sherwood with no or minimal modifications?
I will call Depco tomorrow, but I am curious if anyone has this engine and a Oberdorfer pump and could perhaps provide me with a model#? There is no model # on my Sherwood pump.

Paul,

If you look at the owners encyclopedia on this sight under engines it lists the pump P/N's. There was also a write up about this change in Mainsheet a few issue back.

Thanks Steve,
Don't think that I've looked at the encyclopedia before. It shows Water Pump (Raw): Oberdorfer #202M-15, Sherwood #G-908. This suggests that they are interchangeable. I verified a previous post from StephenK vis email, that he had installed the Oberdorfer #202M-15 with no modifications. Looks like it should be pretty straight forward as long as the XPB is the same as the XP. I'd rather put the considerable cost of a Sherwood impeller into upgrading my raw water pump with an Oberdorfer and make replacing impellers so much easier

Paul,

I did swap out the G908 and went to a N202-15 on my 25XP (on a Catalina 30). I had no problems except having to get shorter bolts as the N202-15 is a direct bolt on and you don't need the clamps that are used to mount the
G908. If I remember corectly, 2 of the 5 holes on the N202-15 lined up to the engine block and thats all I used to mount the pump (and a gasket). The Oberdorfer pump performed flawlessly. If I were doing again today, I would go to the N202-16 as the elbows are 1/2 inch which are a direct match to the
G908 (I believe the N202-15 has 3/8 inch elbows)

I believe the 25XPB may require some modifications to the flange/ base plate. Go and search on sailboatowners.com. I would also call DEPCO for their input. Even if a slight modification is needed, I would convert over to the Sherwood.

Called DEPCO and the person who I talked with seemed knowledgeable but didn't know about replacing the Sherwood with an Oberdorfer on an m25XPB. Interestingly, he said that I was the 3rd person to call today with the same question. He referred me to Don Moyer who owns Moyer marine and is apparently an expert on Universals. He was generous with his time, but said that the Sherwoods mount to the Universals with 4 bolts. He manufacturers an adapter plate from a 4 bolt Sherwood to a 2 bolt Oberdorfer. I thought that the Sherwood mounted with two bolts, and in fact that seems to be verified in pictures from:

I guess I am stuck until I get back to the boat and can better examine the current installation. Or if perhaps there is someone with an Oberdorfer on an M25XPB you could indicate how direct the installation was.? Stephen has verified that it easily mounts on the M25XP, but I don't know if there is a difference with the M25XPB

Hi Paul! How did you finally do on your M25XPB? How looks my sherwood pump right now. I guess it's time to replace it.

Paul;
Oberdorfer makes a complete kit to replace your Sherwood water pump. It is available from both Depco (Tampa) and Cardinal Pump (St. Louis) - Cardinal is also know as 'pumpsandpartsonline' The kit comes with every thing you will need and does not require any grinding as it has a completely round flange. Please see post https://www.catalina36.org/forum/technical-discussion/raw-water-pumps
The kit number is;
OB N202M-837. The 'KIT' comes with new correct size high tensile strength bolts for mounting to the engine, water pump, new mounting flanges, gaskets and new elbows to connect to the water lines.
I made a Post on the forum regarding this when I replaced my Sherwood with the Oderdorfer. Cardinal Pump will offer free shipping if you say you read about them on the Catalina Forum.
