When I bought my C30 in 1988, I got insurance through someone else (maybe via the dealer????). Later, I read an article about someone losing their mast, and the insurance didn't cover it. I called my insurance company and asked; the person on the other end said "Well, I don't really know, but I'd think so...." Called Boat US and got a definite "Yes". I switched.
Boat US insureds get a mag called 'Seaworthy' that contains lots of useful info on things to help prevent having to make a claim; hurricane prep, winterizing, etc. I wouldn't switch just for that, but it does show that they understand boats.

Previously, I was insured withProgressive and then switched to BOAT US. Then last year I insured my boat with Blue Water Insurance and my annual premium was cut in half. Better coverage and they pay for a haul out for named hurricanes. It's worth checking out.

I too would suggest Boats US, you will find other posts on the forum covering this. Boats US has the best deal going and it is best to make this call at the time of purchase as I found making the move after being insured for a while requires a new survey prior to reinsuring and this dilutes the value of switching carriers, better to make the call at the point of sale.

When I first purchased the boat, I applied to BoatUS and was turned down for lack of ownership experience.
Mariners General (Newport Beach) got me set up with standard yacht policy from Travelers. No complaints (no claims either). Five years into it, Travelers required an out-of-the-water survey prior to their renewing my policy. I needed to haul out anyway so I got the survey. Now, with a current survey in-hand, I went shopping for a better deal and guess where I found it – BoatUS, the people that turned me down five years earlier.

I may be a little off base here, but if I remember right, I tried to get a quote from Boat US and got a call from some off the wall company that was an agent for Boat US. Another words I was under the impression that they are not really in the insurance business. Big surprise Boat US trying to get a cut out of something!

I went with Admiralty Insurance Co. when I bought my boat and I'm glad I did. Not 5 days after signing the final papers, and before I had actually taken posession of the boat it broke free from its mooring and drifted into a small bridge.
... $26,000 and 2 months later this insurer was great and covered everything. My fiberglass man told me he cringes when he hears someone has Progressive -- they know nothing about boats, and pay for fiberglass repairs on a "per foot" rate, with no accounting for the complexity of the repair.
My only worry, and this would happen with any insurer, is what will happen to my premium.

They know boats. Your homeowners policy usually doesn't.

I like Boat U.S. for many reasons, but Progressive beat their quote on insuring my boat by a significant amount. I'm still with Progressive.
