Cockpit Tables - Aftermarket

Not sure what make table you have. But my table is self made using hardware from Edson (less expensive that way). To date I have not had any problems with the supports coming loose when bumped. You may have sustained some damage over the years and may need to replace a component. You might check with the mfg. to see if replacement parts are available.

Alan (or other),

What are the dimensions of your table? Are you happy with it? Are you able to get four people around it comfortably? I am about to build one and debating the length at the moment.

thanks

Tim,

I have attached a copy of the schematics I used to construct as well as a picture of it in the down position (limits the length you can make it).

Four people can get around it comfortably, though you want to make sure you are on good terms with your companion :)

This is incredibly helpful, thank you. I am going to start on this afternoon.

I am contemplating an extension to the table as well. One that would slide over the end, when in the up position, to add an additional 4-8 inches or so. Do you think the Edson hardware would support the extra weight?

The supports are fairly sturdy, but I would not want to be the one that makes that call for you. You may want to contact Edson to get their opinion, they were helpful to me when I was making mine.

Allan,

I have finished dimensioning the lumber for my table and glue up is about 75% complete. Your pictures and drawings have been very helpful. I saw that you used the hardware from Edson. Two questions. First, did you buy the kit or did you purchase individual parts? Second, do you think the edson parts provide any advantage? I am considering using a stainless piano hinge to mount to the pedestal and two additional pieces of the same lumber for the supports or a pinned hinge. I believe I can get all the hardware for less than $50 - which will save nearly $300 versus the edson package. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Best - Tim

The hinges Edson uses are called Butler's hinges and they're available from Lee Valley Tools, that's where I got mine when I rebuilt our cockpit table. I'm sure they're available elsewhere. They are better for this job than piano hinges. Our table had piano hinges on it and they were a PITA.

Thanks Bud, that is good info. I love Lee Valley anyway - a good excuse to have a look.
