My CG documentation has our boat listed as 11 Gross and 10 net. I'm not saying that is right, but that's what we have.

Mike,

You are NOT supposed to count the weight of the liquor locker! :D

The forms you fill out with Transport Canada to federally register a boat have a length/width/depth/height kind of formula on them. Ours worked out to about 8.3 for the value to be shown on the plate. Probably metric tonnes I think.

Remember, the "tonnage" is not weight, it's internal volume. For the CG license, for a MK II, 11GT is correct. Its on the document6atiion papers but Catalina will provide it if you ask too.

Just got off the phone with Catalina in Woodland Hills.

To calculate Gross Tonnage, you need:

Length = 36.33
Beam = 11.91
Depth = 5.5 (not draft)

To calculate:

((L x B x D)/100) x 0.5 = 11.9 Gross Tons

I am pretty sure the volume inside the hull is what this formula tries to approximate (and it is just an approximation) and then the volume is corrected for the amount of cargo 'tonnage' the vessel could hold. The whole formula and tonnage measurement is pretty antiquated, but it persists.

So, the type or weight of the external keel means nothing in this case.

I understand you stated that the Coast Guard was asking the question, with the formula now understood, is the answer the same if someone from a Mexican drug cartel asked this question? It may have an effect on resale of our boats south of the border, corrected I think it translates to 22,000 gross kiloage.
