The title is pretty self explanatory: my '83 C36 needs a mast. I bought it as a project this past fall. I feel like I've made a lot of progress, but I'm lacking a major (MAJOR) part of the puzzle in the mast. The price for new is pretty expensive and I was hoping that someone here might have a resource in finding a used one.
I live just north of Boston, but would be happy to know where something like this is sold just about anywhere. Being new to the sailing community, I don't even know where to begin to look.
Thanks!

The stock masts are so heavy duty, and the Catalina rig with dual lowers is so simple, that I don't think these boats lose rigs all that often. I have not seen a Catalina rig for sale used.
There are a couple of companies on the web that salvage and part out boats. Some of them trade via web sites, and some just go through Ebay. I have seen quite a few Florida-based outfits that I guess are parting out hurricane boats, usually the masts look to my eye like they are from Beneteau or Hunter models - they tend to have swept speader hardware and be deck-stepped. This does not mean the tubes will not do the job, you just need to find one long enough and probably spend a few bucks with a rigger for new spreader assemblies etc.
If you have any racing inclinations, I have always thought a J/35 rig would look pretty good in my boat, but it would need a bit more attention to keep it upright.
Find me a J/35 mast in the PNW for my boat and I'll ship you my Catalina rig!
A couple links that may at least get you in touch with some salvager types (some only deal in complete boats):

EBAY!
For what a rig costs, there a probably some boats kicking around that have a suitable rig that you could buy the whole boat for less than the cost of a new mast - you might get some other useful parts too, then spend a weekend chainsawing the thing into a dumpster for a few hundred bucks?

Brian,
Not sure if I can help you much. I trust you have talked to local riggers about the availability of used masts. Occasionally boats get scrapped out, one of our flock lost his C36 on the beach in Monterey. The dodger and many other components were listed on ebay locally. You could put a note out to insurance and salvage companies that you are looking.
Checking with the local rigging shops you may also fined a repaired mast, they sometimes repair them by splicing and may have a one that could be repaired. Having a direct replacement would be nice but, a mast from another model boat may work just fine, a taller stick cut down to size may be an option. Old fiberglass boats eventually get scrapped, the aluminum is often sold for the scrap value of the raw stock. Years ago a local guy built his own boat on the cheap, wound up using an aluminum light pole for a mast welding tangs and a sailtrack on it.
Have you asked your local rigger to price the extursion and build a mast up from the extrusion rather than a complete mast from Catalina?

Steve and Jason,
Thanks to both of you for your in depth answers. This past fall I bought an S2 10.3 on the advice of some others because it has all the correct dimensions for the mast of the C36. Stripped the mast and anything else which seemed valuable, then scrapped the boat. When I had a rigger come out to look at it, he felt the mast was too light for my Catalina because the displacement of the two boats were so different, despite having the same dimensions (15k lbs vs 10.5k lbs). As a result, I'm pretty leery about buying anything that isn't specifically meant for my boat. If there are masts that are known to fit the C36, I'd love to hear that. Because of my inexperience, I think it'd be dangerous to purchase another "could fit" mast.
I checked all the resources you posted. Thanks s'much. Ebay does seem to have a number that may fit, but like I said, I'm hesitant. I'll make sure to look out for a mast out of a J/35, though :)
Again, thank you both. I'll continue to talk up my local resources and see what develops.

I sent an email to the Vancouver Craigslist poster, since they said that the mast is off a Cat 36, but then also said that it is 43' long which is nowhere near a full Cat 36 rig. No answer yet...

And I just got a reply. The guy assures me it is off a Catalina 36, and was deck stepped. Are the newer boats deck stepped?

I can't speak for the MK I but my MKII is certainly KEEL stepped. My previous Catalina 30 was deck stepped.

I am quite certain they are all keel stepped, unless they are tabernacled.

The Craigslist post clearly stated it the mast was from a C36 though that could mean to a non Catalina person a 36' Catalina. So maybe it is from a C350 I think they are deck stepped.

Some C34's are deck stepped and would be a foot or two shorter, that would also makes sense, and I'm sure some 34 owners are paying for 36' of moorage!

I've also tried to contact him, though I only received a laconic response that it was still available and that it was definitely off a Catalina 36. I wrote asking for details and pictures a few days ago and have yet to hear back... even at 4400, it's too expensive to be worth shipping to Boston. I'd be better off to just buy new, right?
Thanks for all the help everyone!
