My microwave needs to be replaced. Seemed like a simple task. However:
First realized the galley light behind the stove had to be removed to get at the attaching screws. Thought I now had it.
Second, I’m finding it difficult to find a replacement Microwave that fits the space. But it’s not over.
Third, Samsung doesn’t make small models anymore and it will probably be impossible to find a microwave with the securing holes in the same location which means new footings, new holes in the floor of the cabinet opening. And of course the final insult to my ability to plan ahead.
Fourth I can’t see a way of replacing the unit and securing it properly to the floor of the space allotted for it without removing the entire galley overhang cabinet. That way the microwave can be attached from above with the footing holes being established in the exact correct place and with it in place reattaching the cabinet back up.
Someone please describe to me an easier way and where I can find a replacement microwave.

Enrique,
I had the same difficulty when it came time for me to replace the microwave in Carpe Diem. I looked all over for one that would fit in that small compartment. I finally located an Emerson; I'm sorry I can't recall exactly where we purchased it but it fits in that area perfectly. It is an Emerson 700W and the Model Number is MW8784SB.
On somewhat of a semi-related issue I purchased a Sanyo refrigerator and wedged it in between the engine compartment and the onboard refrigerator. That way we have a (110V) front loading refrig at the dock. It is listed under Glenn Druhot's upgrades to Carpe Diem.

This past summer I tried every where and on line and could not find a small enough microwave to fit into that small opening. I finally went on Craig's list and found a very old unit (before touch pads, just a dial) that worked. With a little tapping it squeezed into the shelf space. With some velcro and a piece of wood on each side used a wedge, it is held solidly in place. I am curious as to where you found the Emerson? I should get something a little more modern.

Richard,
I will dig deeper through my paperwork to find out where in the world I purchased it. I agree with Enrique it was a royal pain to remove the old one. This particular model fits perfectly. I'll keep looking.

You can purchase the Emerson Model MW8784 microwave at Amazon for $58.
Might just pick one up myself as a spare for the original Goldstar unit now installed. Have to check out the current size for the Goldstar.

Good tip Jack! Can't beat the price. I thought I paid something like $60 last year. Cheers.

I did a little more research on small microwaves, and the feedback on the Emerson units indicated failures after 1-2 years. The Emerson unit that Amazon sells can be purchased at your local Target Store.
I came across another 0.6 cuft /700W unit with almost the same measurements as the Emerson . It is marketed by Contour out of Sarasota, FL
Measurements are 17 long x 10 1/8 high x 12 3/4 deep .They market this Microwave for boats and RVs. You can purchase it thru SWEGO.com, also in Sarasota, FL for $109.95 phone 866 804 8484

Thanks for the feed back. I think my old Samsung was 9.5 inches high and the opening was 10" max. I did buy the smallest one I could find at Walmart or Target and thought I could make it fit, but it was slightly too high. I would have had to cut the top of the opening to squeeze it in and elected not to do that. I think it is an old Goldstar that I finally found for $25 which worked all summer. I should really find a new one.

I installed an Xantrex, 1800 watt inverter (modified Sine wave) last summer, but the microwave on our 1999 C36 will not work on it. I can set the clock, but as soon as I hit the power button it shuts down, leaving the clock blinking. It works fine on shore power. Does anyone have any experience using any of these microwaves on a modified sine wave inverter ? It seems that I read somewhere the microwave’s with digital controls have a problem with the modified sine wave.

I went to Strictly Sail-Chicago yesterday which is always a bright spot in winter. All the dealers want me to trade in my old 36 because of the big demand for good used boats they can sell for a $100,000 or less. I noted that in all the production boats including Catalina, they still use a very small sized microwave. The common brand was Contoure. I checked there website. They used to make one 9.5 inches high, but discontinued the model. Now they have one 10 1/8" high. The 9.5" is a good fit for my boat; not sure the 10 1/8" would fit easily.
