Water pump wiggle

After a crossing of about 25 miles yesterday I noticed antifreeze had been dripping from behind the pulley on the fresh water pump on my M35B engine. Also noticed the pulley had a little play in it, so I figure the bearings and seal are going.

After looking online at Torreson's, I saw that the entire pump was available for about $440, but they also show a seal/bearing unit for about $240. Has anyone done a water pump replacement, replacing only the seal/bearing piece? Sure would be a lot cheaper if it works just as well. Ca it be done without removing the entire pump from the block?

Any input greatly appreciated!

I have never tried to rebuild a water pump. I believe most of the parts are pressed on, not sure how you would do it with the pump on the engine.

The basic engine is made by Kubota. I believe the engine number for the M35B is D-1305E. If you have a Kubota dealer near you I would price a new water pump there. Most of the online tractor places need to know what model of tractor the engine is in, so try to get that info from the Kubota dealer. Or if you can get the part number you can try a google for tractor parts, several places sell them. Typically tractor prices are 30-50% less than from a marine parts store.

If you are losing antifreeze, your problem is the engine circulation water pump. I am not aware that you can rebuild them.

I just bought a spare water pump for my M25xp from EC Power, an industrial generator dealer here in Portland OR. It cost about $106 as I recall. All they needed was the Kubota model or serial number stamped on the flange where the fuel injection pump bolts to the engine block to identify the engine. Mine has not failed yet, but with 3400 hours on the engine, I suspect it may not be to much longer.

For the M25xp (Kubota D950) two pumps are available. One pump has an outlet on the top for the line that goes to the water heater on our boats, and the other is blanked off.

I think if you provide the number on your block to any dealer of Kubota powered equipment, they can get the pump for about the same price.

Good luck
