I stripped and refinished the companionway stairs. They had the rubber step pads on them and I don't know what the glue was that is holding them but it was some tenacious stuff. When I pulled them up, if I pulled against the grain it would actually rip teak right out! That is strong stuff.
So now I have the stairs refinished and want to put the step pads back on, but I have no idea what that glue is. It's not the old standby contact cement because it's clear. Does anyone know what it is?
I'm actually putting varnish on my steps myself after an arduous strip job  Mine did not come from the factory with step pads, I put the stick on non-skid strips on which needed to be replaced every now and then. I'm actually looking around for pads and am considering using the non-skid used for decking, cut to fit. I'd be interested to know what you're putting on, or are you just re-using what was already there? I'll be watching this thread to see people's ideas on adhesive.

Gary, I'm pretty sure these came from the factory but I only say that because I've seen pictures of others boats with what appears to be the same pads. They are a fairly thick black rubbery thing with a very stout diamond pattern on them. I want to re-use them because they do seem to be very sturdy and grippy. If all else fails I'm going to use contact cement, but I think there's something better that was on these already and hopefully someone knows what that is.
