Nav station ideas

I need to re-do my MK I nav station at some point. When I pulled out the PO's old dead Loran, I popped a chart plotter in there to fill the space and I'm just not happy with how the whole thing looks. I have a nice piece of new 1/4" teak plywood to do the job, but I'm trying to figure out what all I want to put there. I'd like to do this just once with no afterthoughts. Some ideas besides the chart plotter and VHF are battery monitor, tank monitor, pen/pencil holder, stereo (currently in the cabinet just forward of the nav station along with DVD player), etc. I'm also thinking of filling in the shelf above as shown in the photo below. I think I grabbed this photo from a For Sale ad somewhere. The fellow did a great job IMO and I'd like to come up with something as professional looking if I can. So, please let me know what you've got mounted at your nav station, so I can get some ideas. You're all such creative folks, I know there are some great ideas out there. Thanks, Mike

Mike, can you provide a Before photo, as your nav station looks now? It might help those of us unfamiliar with the Mk I to better wrap our minds around the interesting challenge you have set before us.

It looks prety good to me now. I am happy with the chart plotter up near the helm so it can be read continuously. I also have a remote access micraphone up near the helm which I find helpful when going through bridges and talking with dockmasters when going into a marina.

About the place that your chart platter is the PO installed a panel of switches that control the VHF, the extra power ports (Cigarette lighter ports) happy radio, chartplotter and there is even an extra switch for a furure gadget I may want to install. I believe a fella never has to many switches or gadgets.

Mike:

Looks very nice now, did you put a varnish on the nav station? As I know our boats did not have varnish below. I like how the shelf above is filled in. That is what is so nice about this site. Lot of good folks with great idea to share.

You might be looking at my "inspiration photo" in the first post. He has the shelf filled in which I really like too. I have a habit of grabbing good idea photos off Yachtworld when I see them. My nav station is 3 posts up. And yes, my entire interior is varnished.

Hi,

I recently purchased a C 36 with a shelf that has been placed over the Nav table. under the shelf is mounted radar and GPS systems. The shelf itself provides some useable space and the brace for the shelf is a good hand rail for manouvering down below in rough weather sailing.

Nice. I like those classy brass fiddles on top.

Mike,
Below are a couple of pix for another way to mount instruments near the nav station. No holes were drilled in the boat for mounting the VHF and radar, so it is easy to "undo" it if you change your mind in the future. Second picture only shows the radar bracket, but the VHF bracket was mounted just outboard of it.

Thanks Tom. I also like the custom electrical panel and battery switches as well as the inverter mounting location. I'm guessing that's a battery charger next to the inverter, great air circulation that way.
