Mast Gyrations

I'm new to this community, but am enjoying and learning from these discussions. Here's the problem. At the slip in a 12-15 mph SW wind our mast is flopping around like a fish dying on the dock! Our heading at the slip is due south. My wife is not happy! I have played around with tension on the boom, main halyard, jib sheet, forestay, backstay tension, etc. I'm in big trouble with my lady. It shakes the V-berth like a tsunami! I know there is a solution! Help Me! It's a marital crisis! Refuge - 01 MKII Tall Rig, I forgot the hull numer.
Thanks! REFUGE

I usually get up and say: "Oh, honey, the wind's 12-13." "How do you know," she says...

Don't sweat it, it happens.

I have a tall rig and it does the same thing. I think that the vibration comes from the furler. Sometimes if I tighten the jib sheets it seems to help.

It's a little crazy. The 36 has a mast like a telephone pole. Nothing should make it vibrate.

If I had a tension guage and a little patience, I might try tightening up on the forward lowers, this will pull the center of the mast forward a little, and the top of the mast back, tensioning the forestay.

Just a thought.

Dave, did you read the link I referenced? Tension has nothing to do with it, unless the forestay is so loose any wind will make it whip around..

Stu,
I guess I should have read the link you provided. Thanks for pointing it out. I am familiar with vortex shedding, (Having seen the Tacoma Narrows bridge film a few times. ) It just never occurred to me that it could be happening to the mast. It may have something to do with the C36 and C34 having a single spreader rig.

I will try the trick with the halyards. Or perhaps I will market an overpriced marine-grade widget to cure the problem.
