I will be doing my annual haulout in a few weeks and one of my projects is to replace the stuffing in the stuffing box. I am contemplating using "GFO" teflon packing - details can be found at www.stuffingboxpacking.com.
Has anyone had experience with this material?

Dave - I don't think you can find anything better. As easy to install as the conventional stuff and it really is virtually dripless.

Craig,
Thanks for the comments. I've ordered some and will give it a try.

as Craig said, it's VIRTUALLY dripless, not completely. Please read the directions carefully.

What size and how much gor-tex do I need? My 93 has the original (I believe) and it drips badly, has waxy deposits on the hull and if I didn't go to her twice a day (we almost live aboard!) I would have repacked this long ago.

Russ - My '91 C34 takes 3/16", one package would probably let you do it twice (3 rings of packing per)

Some have reported to have 1/4 instead of 3/16. Either measure first before ordering, or buy both and return one. Don't use oversized no matter how tempted you are, it'll score your shaft.

I am using it now and I would recommend it. It is virtually dripless when adjusted properly, althouth like most packing you will have to re-adjust the stuffing box after a few hours of use. This was my first season, but I expect to get at least 5 New England seasons out of it.
