I bought a set through West Marine a few years ago. They come in a package of about 4 or 5 and each one in the package is a different size.

We have a 4000 and hope to put a below deck one on before we move to the coast in 2011, Raymarine is the brand but does anyone know what model we need, some things I've read say a C-36 could weigh close to 18K lbs!???

I put the ST6001 Sail System/Sail Pilot package and interfaced it with the ST60 Series instruments on our boat back in 2003/2004. Since the 36 is "on the bubble" for a wheel pilot, I would reccomend the linear drive unit for a couple of reasons.

1. The linear drive unit will handle the boat even when the wind is blowing hard (mid 20s on up).

2. The linear drive unit will still allow you to steer the boat if the steering wheel cable breaks. This happened to me and I was able to use the AutoPilot until we got just outside of the marina and then I used the emergency tiller. (The Emercency Tiller is not easy to use since the handle is very short and there is zero mechanical advantage with it going right on top of the rudder post.

There is an S1 and S1G. The S1G has a rate gyro. I purchased the S1 and have not had any problems with it.

I installed a below-deck autopilot to great success in summer of 2007. I don't recall the model number, but I will look it up for you. Raymarine says it's for vessels to 20,000 lbs. It's one helluva autopilot...tons of muscle. I photographed the entire install, but haven't yet written the procedure for the IC36A...it's on my to-do list, but not at the top. I can certainly share the photos with anyone desiring to do the installation. On my broad-assed MkII the installation of the linear actuator was easy, but that procedure wouldn't apply to earlier boats.

I installed the Raymarine S1G. I am very happy with it.
