Universal 25-xpb review

Although I don't own a Catalina, I have frequently read your  posts to learn about  maintaining my  boat.  I am considering the purchase of a Universal 25-xpb  26 H.P. 3000 RPM motor to repower.  I have read good and bad about this motor, and mostly  about rough running through the RPM range, and high idle requirements.

I would be very  interested in hearing about the pros and cons you can offer.  Alternatively I am considering the  Beta Marine 25 H.P. which is a 3600 RPM motor and the  Westerbeke 35E which has 28 H.P. at 3000 RPM.

Thanks
John

John,

Avoid the XPB even if the Beta costs more.  And even if you have to redo mounts, riser, panel, etc.

The XPB has the raw water pump under the alternator, a really rotten place for it.  It also usually comes with a crappy Sherwood pump.  You're right, it runs rougher than blazes.

The Beta has superb reviews, great support, it's a Kubota block, Beta even helps tell you the tractor parts.

The ONLY place (that I know of) on the entire internet you can find XPB info is the C310 group on www.sailboatowners.com.

You don't need internet help with Beta, hell, the company will freely tell you all you need to know.

Good luck.

I repowered a Cal 34 with a Beta 25. Loved the engine and Beta's support. Very smooth running. Very plug and play install.
