Insurance for living aboard?

I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for insurance for a liveaboard.

I've talked to GEICO and Boat US and they both offer it, GEICO very affordable since I have my car insured with them. But they do not specifically offer 'at anchor' for an option for where you keep the boat. I live aboard True Friend and just lost the sub-lease I had on a slip so am now at anchor off the beach. The GEICO rep I talked to said 'Mooring buoy' was the appropriate category, and when I insisted that there is a difference, he assured me that the closest category was the one to choose.

I wasn't convinced, since I know that the risk of losing the boat on the beach when at anchor is substantially higher than when on a mooring. I asked the rep to let me see the specific coverages and exclusions, but he said they don't send that information until after you buy the insurance (!). He said their competitors would make use of the info, and I could always cancel immediately if I didn't like the terms once I saw them. Stupid!

So I called the company that actually provides the insurance in the quote, and the rep there also said there would be no problem with stating that I am on a mooring when in fact I am at anchor. I again asked for the coverage details, and she said she'd look into how to get me that information, but she hasn't called back.

For me the whole point of insurance on my boat is to cover the loss of my home in the event of -- most likely -- and anchor failure, caused either by gear failure or by another boat. So I want to be really sure that I am covered.

Any of you liveaboards at anchor? What do you do? (What do liveaboard cruisers state as the "place" they store their boat?)

thanks,

Nick --

Give a shout to Krista Patten (Krista.Patten@wellsfargo.com), and ask about the Helmsman's / liveaboard policy. I lived aboard for two years, did extensive research, and this was the only policy I found that fit my needs.

This liveaboard coverage isn't the cheapest but it is extremely comprehensive (I did a lot of searching when looking for a policy). It has the added benefit of carrying basic liability coverage (much like a homeowners policy; it was the ONLY liveaboard policy available that does this) and will also cover property at a storage unit. Krista also deals exclusively in marine insurance, for many liveaboards (her office at Wells is one of only a small handful of brokers nationwide to offer that policy)

Even if that specific one doesn't work for you, Krista is a marine-exclusive broker with a huge range of options available.

Cheers,

David
