We had a C-30 for over 20 years and faithfully removed the cloth covered mattresses every winter for storage in our basement The only noticeable result was that our basement assumed the smell of the boat from Nov-April. I let the cushions air in the sun before installing them and occasionally sprayed with a deodorizer or Lysol. In short, removing did not seem to lesson the smell.
We are now the proud owners of a C36 with mattresses and leather covered cushions. The v-berth and aft berth mattresses require a bit of wrestling to remove and we wonder the about effort to hoist them back aboard in the spring. From our C-30 experience, the boat smell seems to permeate regardless of cushion removal. Our boat is well ventilated under a tarp (not shrink wrap) We plan on leaving the mattresses on board but stowed on edge. Any others have storage ideas that have helped, or experience with deodorization that actually worked?
Thanks

Mine stay on the boat year round but we do use the boat year round also.
A lot of people put a breather material underneath the cushions, something like furnace filter material, that does help with mildew but of course a boat still smells like a boat inside.
I run a dehumidifier in the boat 24/7 when I'm not there and that knocks down the boat smell significantly.

Paul,
I also had a 30 before I bought the 36. Both boats had cloth cushions. I originally brought the cushions home on the 30 but after the first 2 yrs I decided to leave on the boat on edge. Most I put in the bow. Ive had no issue with either and it's been this way for me for 26 years.

I also leave on the boat on end. All seems good. We get moisture absorbers at the dollar store and 8-10 open boxes of baking soda and the boat and cushions stay very dry.

I bring ours home every year and store them in the basement (Heated) We have a good tarp system that has lots of ventilation. Least year we had a lot of freeze and thaw cycles and I did notice mold growth in some of boat. I always stay safe.... It would only take one bad year to ruin the upholstery....
