Lite Cylinder recall (composite propane tank)

I purchased a 10 pound reinforced polymeric propane cylinder a few years ago when my spare steel tank was too rusty. I just got a recall notice today which seems to imply that ALL tanks they made are emergency recalled. They mention a lot of different numbers, so I could be wrong about the 'all' part.

I just wanted you to know in case you have one and did not get the emailed notice. They want you to have it emptied by a qualified tech (how much would that cost?) and then you are supposed to pay to ship it back to them. There is no mention of any refund whatsoever that I could find.

At the very least, any competent refill station will certainly not refill them. Looks like I wasted some money there.

Duane,

Thanks for the heads up, I had considered one of these tanks when my tank goes empty. Still running on the same gas that came on the boat five years ago. Obviously I do not cook aboard much.

Propane is certainly an item on the boat not to be casual about. I would think the recall would dicate the manufacturer would need to compensate the consumer. The only polymeric tank manufacture that I found on line was Ragasco in Sarasota, Florida. If they are the manufacturer and they do not compensate you they are close enough to you you could go throw the bottle through the front window.

On a far different subject related to support, my sons 2006 Honda Civic with 167,000 miles on it developed a cracked block and started leaking coolant.
Honda has a TSB that replaces the engine short block at no cost on 2006 and later models unlimited mileage. Thank you Honda.

Here is a link to the US Department of Transportation recall notice.

Looks like it applies to all of the Lite Cylinder Company propane cylinders.

Just re-read all the stuff they sent and not one mention of reimbursement for the purchase price or the costs to comply with their order.

Is this the "see through" tanks? I was planning on getting one of those. It would be much easier to tell exactly how much gas remains in the tank.

I cited the name 'Lite Cylinder' in the thread title, but maybe it got missed. Yes, those are see through tanks and it sure is nice.

There is no info in the recall stating that the tanks are dangerous, BTW. I will look forward to more info as it surfaces.

From what I read, it seems that:

The company was formed in 2002

All they have ever made is this type of cylinder

Every product they have ever shipped in the last 10 years is recalled
Seems to me to be very unlikely that the company could proceed w/o going through bankruptcy. The government is probably just doing their job, but it's too bad. It did seem like a very interesting product and we haven't heard of a history of boats, campers, or gas grill blowing up do to the product. I've seen similar incidents where one engineer made a small decision w/o overview, resulting in a sequence of events that killed the company and hundreds or thousands of people lost money and jobs.

These are the cylinders that Catalina supplied with my boat.

A least the great design of the gas locker means if they leak, the gas will drain overboard. I wonder how the local agent will handle the recall.

A big Wow and thanks for the heads up. The only thing that kept me from ordering one of these tanks is the on-line dealer I was targeting was out of stock. That's probably because they're not shipping any.
Thanks

I still don't have any concrete details, but /I have been happy with my tank as have many others. I certainly have not read about any failures, but that doesn't mean much, I guess.

I hope a company and all its employees are not going to be ruined for some technicality, but I really just don't know.

I just checked on the store at Catalinaowners.com and the Lite Cylinder is out of stock, but they have a different and slightly more expensive brand available.

Attachment is the latest communication in response to my question posed to John.Heneghan@dot.gov.

Basically says the tanks could leak or suddenly rupture. I did not expect any details as to how they determined that.

Dennis, got certified, registered mail letter yesterday about tank, and friend with a new 355 got a cll com his dealer on Saturday notifying him of recall. I bought mine through U Haul.com and for one reason my letter told me to take it to local UHaul dealer for replacement with 20 lb can. Went to two dealers and they had NO clue want was happening and wanted to give me 20 lb replacement which is unacceptable since need 10lb tank. Gonna look into this and get back to me. Will wait another day and follow back up with him. Interesting my letter had phone number of Lite Container and called only voice mail and no call back yet.

Next step is a refund from UHaul?

I doubt you'll be getting a call from Lite Cylinder. This recall has put them out of business.
