Last year when I cleand the bottom of C36 - the diver noted that the cotter pin for the propeller shaft was missing. This year I bought a cotter pin and I asked him to install it. Now he is saying that there is no hole for the pin. So is the propeller shaft supposed to have a cotter pin? He says if it does not have a hole that one should be drilled on the next haulout. I am thinking that this may cause corrosion inside the hole as there will be no coating on the surface. How is yours done? Do you have a photo of the propeller and the retaining nuts. I have the original propeller. Unfortunately I have no photos.

Yes Haro, install the pin, drill a hole if necessary..there is no coating on the shaft anyway, your zinc will look after any dissimilar metal electrolysis...

I'll bet you have a hole hiding under the castlenut. There should be one to prevent the nut from backing off and you losing the propeller. I have the hole boat is 22 years old and still all is intact!

Thank you Gary and Greig,
Gary, when I bought the cotter pin in the package there were 2 other solid brass 1" x 1/8" pins similar to the one that you are displaying in the photo. Yours has a square cross section - the one I bought were circular. What are they used for? And yes - I do belive there is a hole for the pin - but it may have been too dark for the diver to see. I will see if I can dive myself. Thanks for the help.

Haro,
Not sure about the 1/8" pins What is pictured in the photo I posted is the Key 1/4" square which is shared by the prop and shaft to keep the prop from turning once mounted.
