Rudder bearings?

The insurance surveyor, while inspecting the rudder in early spring, said that there was some slop in the rudder stock and should be repaired next haulout.(rudder shaft bushings?)I cant find anything in Toms tech notes cd or anywhere else concerning this...Any precedent for this?

Greig,
On two different occasions I have had my rudder out and off the boat. First there really are no bearings! The first time out was difficult because the aluminum collar at the top of the rudder (under the deckplate) is (or was) on my boat corroded and stuck fast to the SS rudder shaft and I had to cut it to release the rudder. Now if you have endplay (up and Down) you can fabricate a washer (we used plexiglass 8 years ago) which took care of the end play.
If it is the rudder loose (side to side) you might get some help by checking the shaft seal at the top of the rudder post. It may be as simple as tightening down or worst case replacing the flax seal and tightening.
Seems, as I recall there was a fair amount of discussion on the Catalina 30 web page about sealing the bottom exit of the shaft tube putting antisieze of the rudder shaft and pouring epoxy in from the top. Also someone had used plastic shim material to take up the slack.

Just a note on my Cat 30 it was nearly impossible to take up the end play but repacing the flax seal and tightening it resolved a good deal of the problem. I also found that the seal (bronze assembly) was not tight in the shaft log.

No "bearings" but there are bushings (delron - some sort of plastic)
top and bottom of rudder shaft/post. I have a loose one on the bottom, fixing it on painting haul-out.
