I installed a VW 1500.The install was OK. I had to rig up a idler pulley to get more wrap on Chainwheel.
One thing to think about the VW1500 does not use a rope/chain Gypsy. You have to transfer the rope to the Capstan.
If I was to do it again I would buy the VW 10 with a Chainwheel that will handle both rope and chain.
Maxwell reps recommend VW 10 for the Catalina's.

I replaced the VC500 with a VW500. Easy swap out and works great with 300 feet of 1/4" HT chain. Please see the email below if you want to use 5/16" chain.
Hi Steve
The one for 5/16 chain uses a different wire size (larger motor) and is a tight fit. VW10812V is the model. It uses the same shaft hole and will require new bolt holes.
I have a 1500 that I installed as a horizontal. It took some figuring out but it fits all under our anchor locker lid.
