Water check valves?

All through the potable water system I have small white pvc cylinders (about 1" dia by 3" long) where the hose attaches to a different type of line coming out of pumps, hot water heater and faucets. Are these just to make the junction between dissimilar hoses, or do they have any type of a filter or check valve in them? My galley sink isn't working and I am wondering if they might be the problem.
Thanks,

Not sure about all those check valves, but I've seen a clogged aerator in the galley faucet render the unit inoperable. Is it both hot and cold? This happened to a 36 in our marina.

They SOUND like one-way valves that the PO put in.  Not really necessary and MIGHT lead to a stuck or blocked valve, but photos would help.  Obviously finding the one that is most likely at fault and by-passing it would begin to isolate the problem. Cheers, Kevin
