rudder removal service space

How much service space under the rudder-blade is minimal required to drop and remove the rudder?

I have not measured it, but if I had to guess, it would be 18". You can measure yours from inside, the rudder log is visible.

Durk; I would think that you could get a rough idea of the distance needed by measuring the bottom of the rudder the cockpit floor. If I get down the boat yard today, I can make that measurement fort you and send it along. I have seen people dig a small hole in the ground under the rudder to facilitate removal when the boat is on the hard.

Durk, since your question has been answered now, may I ask what service will you perform to the rudder? The reason I am asking this question is induced by an excessive play of the rudder along the rudder-shaft of my boat and I have not made the choice yet between the removal of the rudder, injection of epoxy or the introduction of plastic sheets around it without removal.
Our Catalina is 28 years old and I believe the rudder has never been serviced.
Thanks.

I experienced also some clearance on the rudder and I am investigating a good solution.
Honest spoken I am not a big fan of the epoxy-method but on the other hand if it is simple and its working for a long period why not.

With our cradle (fin keel sitting about 4 inches off the hard) I had to dig a hole about 12 inches deep to drop the rudder.  Two trucker straps running up to the toerails on either side allowed for loosening one at a time to lower the rudder, then cranking up one at a time to raise it single handed.
