Microwave

Posting this information as it comes up often regarding finding a replacement microwave for the opening on the Catalina 36.  After purchasing and having to return at least 6 appliances, I ended up buying a nice looking stainless LG model LCS0712ST, 700W, .7 cu ft. It does measure 10" instead of 9 7/8", but it was easy to cut the opening.  I took a vibrating saw and set a line as to not overcut.  I cut 1/2 inch instead of 1/4 inch to be able to control the cut.  I cut the top edge and the opening lines up perfectly with the cabinet door on either side.  It is a nice looking microwave and works very well. Apologize for the upside picture??

I just did something very similar.  I used a sabre saw to trim the top rail and clamped a straight edge to the top rail to use as a guide to make a straight cut.

BTW -- for anyone else doing this, please note there are two places in the top rail where there are stainless steel screws attaching the wood rail to the underside of the fiberglass decking.  Look carefully and you should be able to find two spots on the bottom side of the rail where the counter sunk holes for the screws are hidden and filled with wooden plugs.  Dig out the plugs with a sharp knife and then remove the screws before cutting material off the bottom of the top rail.  I shortened my screws a bit and then counter sunk the holes a bit and reinstalled after trimming down the upper rail to insure the shelf still had good support.
