Mast composition

We took a direct lightning hit on June 26, 2010 while docked in Brunswick, GA. The top of the mast is blackened and the halyard sheaves are damaged. There is also discoloration behind the steaming light and the lightning arched from the port side backstay to the bimini frame. Needless to say all the electronics are gone. The strike came down the mast blew off the bilge cover and destroyed all the cables. I need to know if the mast is extruded or hardend aluminum. We are hull # 1564, 1996 model.

Ouch!! My boat was hit last Wed and suffered about 18k worth of damage and it was not even a direct strike. Came in through the ground side of the system. Also had four devices not plugged into anything, an iPod, two hand-held GPS units and a hand-held VHF that were also toasted..

Good luck and I hope your spar is okay..

I suggest that you hook up with co.com, too, there are some very interesting topics there.

Maine Sail used to have a C36 and is a great contributor to this and many other 'boards.

Everyone should read ALL of this: http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising
