I have a bit of a leak at the shift shaft on the transmission. From what I can see from the parts diagram it looks like an ordinary oil seal is just behind the shift lever arm. Just wondering if anybody has changed that seal before and if there's any gotcha's a person should know about changing it?
Bud
If you mean the shifter shaft that is leaking, it is very easy to fix.
Unhook the shifter cable. then endo the four nuts that hold the small plate on the side of the tranny box. slide the shaft and plate off and you will see the seal in the plate you have removed. Note the position of the shifter lever. take it off the shft and slide the shaft out. Go to a hydraulic shop and they should have a seal that will fit. It is a common size.
Any problems give me a call . (905) 853 1073.

Bud.
If you can get the size. Id,of and width of the seal it would be great. Better yet would be the name and the number on it. I would bet it would be metric as alot of seals are.

I found a repair manual on the web for all the HBW transmissions. It shows the seal part as being "SD 20 X 26 X 4" and the Hurth Part ID.106864. It seems the first number is a standard seal ID number. It is the same on all the HBW transmissions.
Torreson's show the new ZF part number as 0634502009 and it's 15 bucks. They also show the gasket part ID 254716 and it's 6 bucks. Probably can get it from the Cdn distributor Anthony-Keats Marine, prices seem cheap enough for OEM stuff. I see a lot of posts about this on the web so it seems a common problem, worth ordering two sets I guess.
I couldn't find any manuals on this site for the Hurth trans, I could post this one if anyone's interested. Just not sure how or where I would do that.
Bud, could you please post the link to the repair manual??? I'd love to have that on hand.
Thanks and good luck with your repair.

Gary, I posted it in the Owner's Encyclopedia.

If that's wrong maybe one of the admins would move it where it should be, I wanted to put it in the Manuals section but couldn't find how to do that.
Would this help?
