I bought a 1989 last summer. Over the winter I removed and cleaned the fuel tank, reinstalled, and put in 30 gallons of fresh diesel. I am concerned there is an air pocket in the fuel pickup tube, so i thought I could clear this air pocket by running the fuel pump, pumping the fuel and air pocket into a catch jar. When I turn the key on, I her the fuel pump clicking, but no fuel is pumped out by the fuel pump. Is there some other trigger, like the engine running, to start the fuel pumping out of the fuel pump?

Bill... sounds simple, but are you sure the shut-off valve on the top of the tank is open?

Ignore this, too many hours working on the boat. Got the goes-into and the goes-outa backwards.
