Companionway hatch slide tape

The slide tape for my companionway hatch is getting difficult to repair. I have used double sided adhesive flooring tape to to stick the slide tape back down for several years.

On the previous C36 web site someone indicated that they obtained replacement adhesive slide tape from McMaster-Carr part number 76445A763 "Strong & Slippery UHMW Polyethylene Tape 1" Width X 5 Yards Length, .0115" Total Thickness"

McMaster Carr do in fact have it however when I ordered it they informed me a day later: "Thank you for your order. Unfortunately, due to the ever increasing complexity of United States export regulations, McMaster-Carr will only process orders from a few long-established customers in Canada. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this causes you." I sent them an e-mail asking who they supplied in Canada (so I could purchase from them, however I did not get a reply. I have goggled and haven't found a Canadian supplier.

Does anyone know of a Canadian supplier?

Hi Malcolm:

I purchsed two strips of UHMW plastic from Warehoused Plastic Sales in Toronto. The web site is http://www.theplasticstore.com/ .

They cut two strips 1.0" wide by 8' long of 3/32" (0.094") thick UHMW from a 4' X 8' sheet and only charged for the strips I purchsed. It is a bit thicker than what you had, but should last a long time.

They did not have any self adhesive strips, but you should have no problem if you use the carpet tape.

Thank you Tom - you have solved my problem!

I find the hatch cover catches the leading edge of the current tape and bends it. The thicker material should stand up better. It looks like the UHMW material is used for heavy duty industrial applications. We will see how the flooring tape works out with the thicker material.

My hatch tape used to turn up as it would get caught on clothing. After trimming the leading edge of the tape to rounded corners 3 years ago, I have had no further problems.
